No Man's Sky Voyagers delivers its most transformative ship upgrade ever

No Man's Sky Voyagers feels, to me, like one of the game's most important overhauls yet. More fundamental than any planet, or even your home base, your ship is the centerpiece that everything in NMS revolves around. Now, it's been completely redesigned with a new 'Corvette' class that features complete, functional interiors that you and your friends can live and work in while you zoom across the galaxy. It's one of the most transformative No Man's Sky updates ever, and it's available right now.

"Your ship is maybe the most important character in No Man's Sky," Hello Games founder Sean Murray explains. "It's so central to the game that now, when we change it, everything in the game feels completely different." Ships now have full interiors - med bays, sleeping quarters, war rooms, radars, teleporters, you name it. It's a dramatic and fundamental change that took a long time to make happen, and is about to totally alter how one of the best space games around feels.

These Corvettes are "huge ships with hulls, wings, landing gear, cockpits, engine parts, thrusters, and more, arranged to your own unique sci-fi design." Essentially, you have a mobile base at your disposal; one you and your friends can build and share together to adventure as one across the sandbox game and show off your own personality and flair.

"Building a ship, decorating it with your friends, your own space that you share together, everyone with their own roles, it feels really special." Murray notes that this feels very different from traditional No Man's Sky base construction because your spacecraft comes with you everywhere you go, allowing you to show it off more easily and make use of it at every turn.

"This has been one of the biggest undertakings for our little team," Murray remarks. "Every area of the game has to be reworked in some way. Having your multiplayer crew walking around, just calmly editing your ship as it travels at warp speeds towards a planet… It's actually pretty insane what's going on behind the scenes to make all of that work."

Corvettes are typically encountered "a little way into the game," although Murray says veteran players "should be able to unlock them reasonably swiftly." If you want to get into the workshop as soon as possible, however, the new Corvette expansion is designed to fast-track you towards starting to put your new mobile home together.

Murray adds that the tech in development here has an even grander purpose, as it'll also serve to enhance the studio's next game when the Light No Fire release date eventually arrives. He calls Voyagers "one of our biggest updates," one that "opens up a whole new path for the future."
