One of the best value gaming laptop deals we've ever seen has just gotten better, as the MSI Thin has dropped to $549 at Walmart —a quite frankly remarkable price for a machine packing decent gaming specs, including an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 gaming GPU. Beyond the GPU, this laptop also features an Intel Core i5 CPU and 16GB of dual-channel RAM, as well as a 144Hz, 1080p screen.
This configuration isn't far off the specs of some of the machines we've highlighted in our buying guide to the best gaming laptop, and far surpasses the specs we typically see at similar prices. A big part of the incredible value in this MSI laptop is the Nvidia GeForce RTX 4050 GPU, which supports Nvidia DLSS 3 super resolution and frame generation.
While the RTX 4050 is an entry-level gaming GPU, it's got more than enough juice to run some of the latest releases at decent settings, but you'll be able to push some older games much further. If you love playing esports games such as Valorant, CS2, and League of Legends, you'll be able to push these games to high frame rates, which will look great on the 15.6-inch, 144Hz 1080p screen.
On the CPU front, you're getting an Intel Core i5 13420H, a laptop-specific processor with a maximum clock speed of 4.6GHz. It comes configured with four P-cores and four E-cores. Performance cores are what matter for gaming, so while it would be nice to have more available, this CPU still beats out most of the competition we see at this price, which is often older 11th or 12th-generation Core i5 CPUs.
Meanwhile, the 16GB of system memory is configured in a dual-channel setup, which will aid performance compared to a single 16GB stick of RAM. It's also not soldered to the motherboard, which means you will be able to upgrade to some of the best gaming RAM from our buying guide over time if you want.
As for the screen, we've alluded to it a few times already, but you're getting a 15.6-inch, 1,920 x 1,080 IPS panel, which we've found trumps the VA alternatives in our IPS vs VA guide when it comes to fast action. IPS screens are generally more responsive and suffer less ghosting at high frame rates, although VA panels usually offer deeper blacks and higher contrast.
The only obvious downside to this MSI Thin gaming laptop is the storage space, which is a measly 512GB. This would barely fit three copies of Baldur's Gate 3. However, just like the RAM, this is also upgradable, so you can take a look at our guide to the best gaming SSD and grab yourself a reasonable upgrade to store more games.
