Peak's rootin', tootin' Mesa update has been an absolute blast to play so far. It's a Skywalker's worse nightmare, what with all the sand about the place, but the new desert biome serves as the perfect reminder to always wear SPF. Unfortunately, some have been left saying 'what in tarnation?!' as the dune-filled map has gone completely AWOL. But don't fret, the devs are working on it.

The Peak Mesa update dropped a couple weeks back; the endnote on what has been an overwhelmingly successful early post-launch period for one of the year's best indie games. Having already shipped over five million copies, despite free-to-play copycats popping up here and there, Aggro Crab has been putting in the work to keep the hype locomotive going with its new wild-west-themed biome. There's even dynamite now, which I absolutely haven't used to grief my friends at opportune moments (sorry, gang).

In its first week of life, the Mesa was the only map you could play, completely replacing the frigid Alpine region so players could get to grips with Peak's hot new challenge. Beyond that, it was supposed to enter a standard, random rotation between the pair each run. However, for some, there's been a slight overcorrection of the odds, and only the Alpine has been seen in the wild for the past week. Suspicious.

As Aggro Crab notes in its new hotfix patch notes, there's only a miniscule chance of this happening naturally - 0.78%, in fact. This has led the studio to begin investigating the phenomenon as a possible bug. The fix, for now, is that it's going to be Mesa time, all the time until "later this week" when the dev's desert-delving concludes.

Though it's unclear how widespread this issue is, it could be a factor in the playcount drop-off over the past week. As SteamDB shows, the Mesa update has brought record-high concurrent player counts, though this has sloped downwards over the last seven days. Of course, I'd posit post-binge burnout for many overeager scouts as the most likely cause for this trend, but there may be a few climbers with Alpine fatigue in there, too.
