Cult classic PC adventure game returns 23 years later with a major upgrade

Syberia is renowned as one of the best written adventure games ever made. Created by Microids and Benoît Sokal, a Belgian comic book artist, the 2002 project was the first official entry in a series that's spanned five games, including the recently remade introduction to its setting, Amerzone. Earlier this year, we learned that Syberia was set to receive its own relaunch, which would bring the classic to current audiences with a new version as fully reworked as other adventures like Myst and Riven. Now, with today's launch date announcement, we have news that this remake isn't far off.

Syberia was lauded when it originally came out for its unique alternate history setting and a well crafted story that made it stand out in the adventure game genre. It follows a lawyer called Kate Walker, who, along with the robot Oscar, finds herself caught up in a quest that takes her from Western to Eastern Europe, involving mammoths and lost islands, opera singers and eccentric inventors.

The remastered version looks to maintain core elements from the original while drastically overhauling others. Its visuals have been changed and its control scheme and user interface reworked, but the most extensive tweak comes by way of the game's puzzles, which have been redesigned to be less opaque than before. This, more than anything else, seems like it may help overcome the barrier of entry that adventure games of the era set up, providing an easier way to experience Syberia by reducing some of the frustration its original design created.
