Samsung has just unveiled a new PCIe 5.0 gaming SSD with a colossal 8TB capacity. The new Samsung 9100 Pro 8TB follows on from the 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB models launched earlier in 2025, with the manufacturer claiming the new 8TB drive can read at similarly fast speeds. More importantly, that 8TB of storage space gives you a mammoth-sized capacity that enables you to install loads of the latest games - assuming it formats to 7.26TB, you could even install 48 copies of Baldur's Gate 3.

With its blazing-fast performance, the 2TB and 4TB versions of this drive excelled in our Samsung 9100 Pro review, and it quickly jumped onto our guide to the best gaming SSD. While this drive has since been surpassed by the even quicker new WD Black SN8100, the introduction of this new 8TB model gives Samsung a competitive edge when it comes to capacity.

The new 8TB Samsung 9100 Pro will be available in versions with and without a heatsink, and the latter is designed to work with a PlayStation 5 as well as a standard desktop PC. Samsung claims the new 8TB drive can hit a top sequential read speed of 14,800MB/s, with a top write speed of 13,400MB/s. Those speeds are in line with the 4TB model we tested, which hit 14,725MB/s and 13,431MB/s in our CrystalDiskMark benchmark.

It's very far from cheap, though. We're waiting for Samsung to confirm the US price, but the UK price is £781.49 for the bare drive, and £769.99 for the heatsink model, putting it in the same league as a top-spec new GPU, such as the Nvidia GeForce RTX 5070 Ti. That's around double the cost of the 4TB version, which makes sense for the extra capacity and the convenience of having it all on one drive, but that's still a huge amount of money for a storage device. It's a good $200 more than an 8TB WD Black SN850X, for example, which might be half the speed in synthetic sequential tests, but is still plenty capable enough in real-world use.

If you have the money, though, I absolutely recommend buying a large-capacity SSD - it's one of the best upgrades you can make in terms of changing how you use your PC. I upgraded from a 1TB Samsung 980 Pro to a 4TB Samsung 9100 Pro a few months ago, and I love getting the fast performance while not having to worry about storage space - you just don't have to clear out your drive every few weeks anymore. I currently have Indiana Jones, Avowed, Civ 7, Oblivion Remastered, The Last of Us Part 2, Dawn of War Definitive Edition, F1 25, Clair Obscur Expedition 33, and Doom The Dark Ages, and plenty of other software installed, and I still have over 2TB free.

If you're thinking of upgrading, check out our full guide on how to install an SSD, which takes you through the fitting process. You'll also need a motherboard with a PCIe 5.0 M.2 slot to run this drive at full speed, so read our best gaming motherboard buying guide if your board only has PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots available.
