I've always wondered why more games don't ape the aesthetic of Minecraft and its similarly blocky cousin, Roblox. The hugely popular games require talented artists, but not the time and precision of hyper-realistic character models that triple-A titles strive for. On the indie scene, where pixel art and cel-shading reign supreme, why not try something different? That's exactly what Everwind is doing, mixing Minecraft's art direction and crafting mechanics with a Skyrim-style fantasy open world, where you can shoot fireballs, slash golems, and live out your stealth archer dreams.

There was a lot going on at Gamescom Opening Night Live, so you'd be forgiven for missing this unusual indie. Everwind debuted a brand new trailer at the Geoff Keighley-fronted showcase, showing off plenty more that it has in store. I, for one, can't wait for this new survival game.

The new trailer showcases exactly why Everwind is vying to become one of the best sandbox games, but also why RPG lovers should take note, too. With three skill trees, a variety of approaches to combat, and procedurally-generated equipment to fill your pockets with, this is a game to watch.

After a successful Kickstarter earlier this year, developer Enjoy Studio is clearly happy to share more about the game with the world. The trailer shows off those impressive floating islands and some Breath of the Wild-esque gliding, but I'm most interested in the crafting and combat.

You can dig, just like Minecraft, and a crafting table looks like it will perform the same function as in Mojang's hit game, too. However, building stuff extends to pipes and mechanical functions, too, as we see the player create some kind of steampunk airship to traverse the map in. It's giving Tears of the Kingdom, but potentially with even more freedom.

Everwind: A hulking green stone golem faces off against a small voxel warrior with a sword

When it comes to the action, we see the player fighting with swords, axes, shields, and bows. All standard fare for a medieval setting. Fireball-throwing staves and glowing potions make up the fantasy elements, as do the enemies. From skeletal warriors to ore-pocked golems, you never know what you're going to come up against in the next dungeon.

If you can't wait to play Everwind, which still doesn't have a release date, why not try out some of the best Minecraft mods to see if you can replicate the survival RPG in the game it takes so much aesthetic inspiration from? Alternatively, pick up one of the best RPGs and just imagine the blocks. Either way, you're in for a good time.

We'd love to hear your thoughts on Everwind and the Minecraftification of RPGs, so feel free to let us know in our community Discord server, where readers and staff lurk in the corners crafting potions for hours at a time.
