Hit soulslike Black Myth Wukong is getting a surprise, horror-tinged sequel

Black Myth: Wukong was one of the biggest surprises of last year. A massively popular take on the Chinese classic Journey to the West, Wukong combines the spectacle of a game like Devil May Cry 5 with the more methodical, punishing combat of Elden Ring and Wuchang: Fallen Feathers. Its sequel, Black Myth: Zhong Kui, was just unveiled through a surprise trailer during Gamescom's Opening Night Live. And it looks to pick up where Wukong left off, while also adding some extra horror to the formula.

Black Myth: Zhong Kui will still be a single-player, action-focused RPG game, but its tone appears to have shifted from Wukong's to lean further into horror. This makes sense because, as its title makes clear, the next Black Myth is focused on Zhong Kui, a Taoist deity who exorcises and commands evil spirits as the 'king of ghosts.'

The trailer doesn't show off how Zhong Kui will play as a character, but it does serve as an evocative statement of intent. In it, a pair of brothers argue with one another before they're interrupted by the sight of two enormous monsters walking nearby. The teaser ends with a shot of the procession these demons are leading, panning out to show Zhong Kui, dressed for battle and sitting astride a giant tiger.

Black Myth: Wukong offers more than a few frightening environments to explore and its creature design is also a highlight, so a follow-up that centers more directly on horror and otherworldly beings seems like a solid concept.

There's no launch date set for Black Myth: Zhong Kui yet, but we'll provide updates as they become available.
