There's nothing wrong with combining action and horror design. Some of the best scary games, like Silent Hill 2, Alan Wake 2, and Amnesia: The Bunker, manage to create an eerie atmosphere even while allowing the player to fight back against enemies. Project: Spectrum, a new horror game from Delta Force creator Team Jade that was just announced during Gamescom's Opening Night Live, looks to prove this out. In a big departure from Team Jade's previous work, the project looks to channel the supernatural gunplay of Trepang2 and Fear, as well as the shape shifting exploration of Prototype.
The trailer for Project: Spectrum shows off a horror game that looks as interested in scaring its player as thrilling them with kinetic gunfights. In it, we see the protagonist move through dimly lit, ominous environments with pistol or shotgun held out in front of her, fighting murderous creatures before she transforms into a black tentacled monster herself.
Enemies consist of armed, seemingly human soldiers, but also living mannequins and strange assemblages of goopy limbs. The mysterious main character is shown tossing Molotov cocktails or unloading bullets at foes before turning into a monster herself and scuttling along walls.
Hopefully, as we learn more, Project: Spectrum's approach to action horror will clarify further. Even with just a brief look at the game, its premise alone makes it seem like something worth keeping an eye on.
