Never count out Call of Duty. In the decade or so that's passed since it was consistently the most popular FPS option in videogames, the series has fallen in and out of favor a number of times. With a new entry every year, though, it's never long before the various studios behind the military shooter hit on a successful tweak to the Call of Duty formula. Last year's Black Ops 6, for example, was well received, whereas 2023's Modern Warfare 3's players were less enthusiastic. Soon enough, we'll have a chance to see if the latest entry to the series, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, is able to capture the same attention as its predecessor as its launch date was just announced alongside a lengthy new gameplay trailer.
After many, many years of annual launches, it was safe to predict that the Black Ops 7 release date would arrive this October or November. Gamescom's Opening Night Live showcase helped nail down exactly when we can expect the FPS game to come out, though, and gave us a better look at how it will play.
Footage of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 showed off the game's futuristic setting, which brings back several elements from Black Ops 3 and other, earlier Call of Duty entries, like a new version of jetpack-enabled movement mechanics and fights against mechs. While leaning further into sci-fi settings and acrobatic movement abilities was divisive in the series' past, BO7 is a new game and these inclusions could be more successfully employed thanks to lessons learned before.
More interestingly, BO7 will include a co-op campaign mode that supports up to four players, which is more than welcome given the dearth of modes in this vein in recent FPS games. A look at its zombie mode also showed the return of top-down shooter levels akin to the old Dead Ops Arcade mode.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 will launch on Friday November 14, 2025. You can wishlist it on Steam right here.
