I adore a good dark fantasy world. Whether I'm re-reading Berserk for the umpteenth time, taking another stab at beating Elden Ring's Malenia, sans pants, or relishing in the twisted world of Sanctuary, there's something deeply intoxicating about the subgenre that always gets me hyped (I'm sure my therapist would have a field day). Solo dev Casey Clyde is equally enthused by all things harrowing, following up Diablo-like Into the Necrovale with a new roguelike ARPG, Cursemark, that you can try out right now.

Cursemark is a gorgeously grim action-exploration game that's inspired by the likes of Blasphemous, Diablo, and Hades. Here, you explore the biodiverse, pixel-powered Unknown Lands, slaying all manner of horrifying beasties as you go. As with any of the best roguelike games out there, dying on its grassy plains or molten mounds is very much the end, throwing you right back to the beginning to venture forth once more.

Whereas Into the Necrovale's builds revolved around item combinations in a similar vein to one of the best survival games, Vampire Survivors, Cursemark goes harder on the magical elements. Here you'll have to master your buildcraft by utilizing a mixture of spells, wards, and ultimate abilities you acquire on your journey to navigate the challenges ahead.

Similarly to Elden Ring Nightreign, thorough exploration is the key to success. While you're not time-gated like you are in Fromsoft's big, co-operative Limveld adventure, that doesn't mean you can rest on your laurels. You'll find your share of powerful bosses in each biome, necessitating you go out of your way to conjure up the most utterly ridiculous synergies you can think of.

The Cursemark demo is now available on Steam. If you fancy yourself a capable spellblade, then you can check it out here.
