In the four years since its release, I don't feel that Scarlet Nexus ever received the recognition it deserved. It combines hack-and-slash combat with telekinetic magic and ties it all together with an engaging narrative. Why it wasn't more popular is beyond me, but I hope the fact that Fanatical has brought it down to its lowest price ever for a few days will encourage some new people to play it.

Despite not cementing itself as one of the best RPGs in the hearts of the community at large, Scarlet Nexus succeeds in telling a futuristic sci-fi story with a lot of genuine human emotion at its heart. You play as Yuito Sumeragi and Kasane Randall, humans with psionic abilities who work for the Other Suppression Force (OSF), and take on the mutants who are hungry for our brains - and no, it's not a zombie game, despite that one tiny similarity.

Yuito and Kasane are both very different protagonists - Yuito comes into the OSF as a new recruit from a prestigious family, while Kasane is a mysterious scout who has managed to catch their attention. These starkly different backgrounds create an occasionally tense dynamic, and it's great to see the relationship that grows between them.

With adrenaline-pumping combat that feels Devil May Cry-inspired, Scarlet Nexus' best feature is the ability to hammer your enemies with telekinetic attacks, tossing random objects at them across the field of battle using your mind. Before long, you'll have built a massive combo and depleted their health bar with ease.

While some took issue with the game at launch, lots of the game's early problems have been ironed out in subsequent updates, and it remains a personal favorite of mine years later. I'm always going to recommend it to people, especially when it's available at such a good price. For a short time, you can get Scarlet Nexus for just $8.09 / £5.80 at Fanatical, which is a huge 87% discount. If you're looking for some solid fun, wrapped up in a gorgeous, vibrant sci-fi world, you're heading in the right direction.

Even though Scarlet Nexus is yet to get a sequel (Bandai, please, I beg you), you can still take a look at our upcoming PC games list for other things to get excited about. Alternatively, you can find our list of the best JRPGs if you want a more standard role-playing experience.
