Good news, RTS fans, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War's long-awaited remaster is here

If you're an RTS fan of a certain age, Warhammer 40k Dawn of War is likely up there as one of your favorites. Offering the same deep, military fantasy as games like Command and Conquer but entrenched in the world of Warhammer, it's a true classic. Just a few weeks out from its 21st birthday, its remaster is finally here. "Faithfully enhanced" by the game's original developer, Relic Entertainment, you can jump into this modernized version of Dawn of War right now on Steam and GOG. Oh, and alongside the typical introductory discount, those that own the old version of the game will be able to get a healthy 30% off.

While there are several great Warhammer RTS games around for you to play these days, Dawn of War was the forefather. Released in September 2004, it was an instant classic for real-time strategy fans, and went on to get three expansions - Winter Assault, Dark Crusade, and Soulstorm. Thankfully, this new remaster bundles the base game and this trio of post-launch content together in a beautiful, nostalgic package.

Dubbed the Dawn of War Definitive Edition, it brings a whole host of visual upgrades, technical improvements, and more to get it running incredibly on modern PCs, all while preserving "the grimdark soul of the original."

In the visuals department, there's full 4K support with up to four times upscaled textures, new lighting and environmental effects, and support for a wider camera draw distance to really appreciate the scale of Dawn of War's battlefields. Its improved HUD is designed with modern widescreen monitors in mind. While the gameplay remains largely untouched, you'll find improvements to pathfinding and large-army support. Best of all, for those that have been playing the game for years, it's still compatible with all of the community mods that have been made over the last two decades.

Relic confidently says that "this is Dawn of War as players remember it," so get your Space Marines, Orks, and nostalgia goggles ready, because it's time to head into battle once again. The best part is that this remaster of a true classic isn't going to set you back all that much, and there are currently two discounts on offer.

Warhammer 40k Dawn of War Definitive edition is out right now on Steam and GOG, with a 10% introductory discount making it $26.99 / £21.59 for newcomers. However, there's also a 30% discount for anyone that already owns the Dawn of War Anniversary Edition - that's the edition that existing owners of the game should've been upgraded to last year.
