Localization is a key part of the game development process. If you want your game to be enjoyed by players across the world, then you need to meet them in their own language. This is especially true for text-driven games, RPGs, and the like, but it's also the case for action-adventures, FPS games, and grand strategy titles. The Pegasus Expedition fits the latter descriptor, and prior to this week was available in English, Russian, and Simplified Chinese. This covers plenty of the globe, but there are a lot of players who don't speak any of these three languages. Luckily, developer Kalla Gameworks is adding every other language to exist. Kind of.

After a period in open beta, the latest patch for The Pegasus Expedition has now launched. This patch allows players to add their own language modules to the game's files, so they can enjoy it in their mother tongue. However, you'll have to do the legwork if you want to read the 4X game's descriptions in Spanish or, indeed, Klingon.

The Pegasus Expedition didn't quite make our list of the best grand strategy games, but it shakes up the genre enough to be worth a session, especially for its low price during the Steam 4X sale.

If you want to add your language to The Pegasus Expedition, whether real or fictional, you'll have to head into the game files and edit them yourself. Once you've created your own directory, you'll have to manually translate every line of text in the game in order for them to show up when you finally get a chance to play. Thankfully, Kalla Gameworks created this handy tutorial so you don't get stuck.

I'm not sure my language skills are good enough to create my own translation of the game (besides, I only speak two, and they're both already in the game), but I'm sure keen linguists will post their translations of The Pegasus Expedition—or bey'luch—in online communities before too long.

The Pegasus Expedition is available for just $3.99 / £3.39 until Monday, August 18 as a part of the Steam 4X sale. You can buy it here.

If you don't want to go to all the effort of hand-translating an entire game into a fictional language, plenty of the best 4X games already have more localization options available—although I'm unsure if any can be played in Klingon. If you want some great sci-fi but aren't fussed on genre, our list of the best space games should be your next (space)port of call.
