I know not every game should be all about the romance, but I'm not going to lie, what drew me to The Sims 4's latest expansion pack was definitely the ability to woohoo in the sky. I'm a self-proclaimed hopeless romantic, and my strict diet of fantasy had me picturing this as a dramatic, magical, cloud-shrouded kind of moment. Think 'Thumbelina and Prince Cornelius bringing spring back with their singing; Garret showing Kayley the wonders of the forest in Quest for Camelot. Perhaps I got ahead of myself, though, because when it finally came time for my new fairy Sim to woohoo in the sky, I was left disappointed.

The thing I love about life games is the ability to simulate the best aspects of your own life, as well as the bits that simply aren't possible. Let's face it, I don't have wings and I can't magically shrink myself to the size of a quarter, so when The Sims 4 dropped its fantastical new expansion pack I was excited to try out all the fun fantasy nonsense I can't do in real life.

There's a lot of fun to be had with Enchanted by Nature. Painstakingly redecorating my house so I can prioritize enchanted plants? Check. Shrinking to have dance parties in my tiny fairy paradise? Check. Flirting with and dating other hot fairies with Shakespearean names? Check.

A fairy sim enchants a house plant

But when it came to romance, I almost expected something more…enchanting. The option to woohoo in the sky is a new addition to The Sims 4, and after choosing to boot up my latest game as a fairy Sim it was one of the main things I was keen to try out.

After a good few hours of grafting Rick, my first romantic partner, the option to woohoo in the sky appeared and I thought 'why not, let's take it for a whirl.' What followed was cute, sure, but rather anticlimactic; you shrink - if your partner isn't a fairy you shrink them, too - and then disappear in an explosion of romantic sparks and fireworks before crash-landing back on the ground. I got piles of fairy dust out of it, useful for enchanting my many, many plants, but that was pretty much it.

I'm not quite sure what I was expecting, but it was definitely something more thrilling than that - accidentally romancing fairy elder Jacobo proved more interesting, even if he did keep showing up at my house at odd hours offering copious amounts of food and bad chit chat.

You can now woohoo in the sky as a fairy in the Sims

I've tried plenty of woohoo locations playing Sims over the years; from dumpsters to showers, I consider myself somewhat of a connoisseur. As a result, my kneejerk reaction was to blame non-fairy Rick for the terrible woohoo. Perhaps fortuitously, my game crashed an hour or so later, so I was able to redo the whole thing again with the other Sim that I had my eye on. And no, it absolutely wasn't Jacobo.

Enter Oberon, who was a much more exciting first date. Things went absolutely swimmingly, and after much flirtation and batting of eyelashes, I decided to give my skybound situationship another go. While the animation does differ slightly when you're woohooing in the sky with another fairy, it still felt underwhelming. It doesn't change when you're outside, either, so no sweeping me off of my feet up into the sky in a dramatic Thumbelina fashion, just more fairy dust. At least the plants got something out of it.

Overall, the experience was pretty mid. A nearby party bush proved more effective - even if my Sim did take the very, very long way around to find said party bush - and, while I'm yet to test things out in my cottage-core dream home, I imagine that'd be more interesting, too.

The more I progressed through Enchanted by Nature, the more my interest waned. It's enjoyable enough, and I will hold my hands up and say I spent hours happily designing and customizing my fairy Sims and their houses. I'm also nursing the biggest crush on Spruce Almighty, and the new decor items are incredibly cute. But I was still expecting more, or at least something more thrilling than the feeling that I got from woohooing in the bushes - a mechanic that's been around for a while now.

In the meantime, I'm going to keep myself busy with my plants - and maybe create a few more hot fairies to tide me over.
