LG has showcased a new OLED gaming monitor at a trade show in South Korea this week that it's calling "the world's fastest" screen. This new 27-inch display features a huge 540Hz refresh rate, but it intriguingly also offers a 720Hz mode. However, the latter mode has a massive restriction, though, which we'll address in a minute.

OLED displays are the premium choice for gamers, and our best gaming monitor guide is filled with OLED models across different resolutions, sizes, and budgets. This LG display certainly has a claim to be one of the first to feature a 540Hz rate, given that it was only two months ago that the Samsung Odyssey G6 OLED was unveiled as a "world's first" with a 500Hz refresh rate.

On paper, this new LG OLED display is certainly a showstopper. The headline-grabbing 540Hz rate on this 1440p display makes it world-leading, at least for the moment, but it's that 720Hz mode that intrigues me the most. According to LG, it uses "Dynamic Frequency & Resolution technology" to boost the rate up to 720Hz, although it doesn't elaborate on how that tech actually works.

There's a big catch, however. Running the display at 720Hz means that the resolution drops to just 720p. Modern gaming has long since moved on from 720p resolutions, and on a 27-inch OLED panel, any gameplay at 720p is going to look awful in terms of pixel density.

Other details on the monitor are light, but according to LG, the panel uses its newest fourth-gen OLED Tandem technology, giving it a maximum brightness of 1,500 nits and 99.5% coverage of the DCI-P3 color space. It's unclear how much it will cost, but with the 500Hz Samsung model costing $1,300, we'd expect this LG alternative to have a similarly expensive price tag.

540Hz for a gaming monitor is blazing fast, but overkill unless you're playing professionally in the most competitive first-person shooters. After all, many gamers can't tell the difference between 144Hz and 240Hz, let alone 240Hz and 540Hz. It will also require a top PC to use it for serious gaming at those frame rates, using a recent GPU from our best graphics card guide.

Until we can test this monitor out for ourselves, we won't be able to say whether this is a good deal or not. If you're thinking about 720Hz, however, we'd recommend that you forget it.

If you're thinking about an upgrade, you could always consider a gaming laptop with an OLED display. Our best gaming laptop guide has a number of options, including the powerful Razer Blade 16.
