This Halloween cocktail is loosely based on a classic sour ratio (two parts spirit, one part sour, one part sweet): vodka meets sour apple schnapps and hard apple cider for sweetness. Pour a bit of grenadine over a bar spoon to create the layered look.

Tips for Making a Poison Apple Sour

Keep these tips from the BHG Test Kitchen in mind when trying this cocktail for yourself.

  • We used a hard apple cider to play up the apple flavor, but you could also swap in an apple flavored sparkling water instead.
  • Add fun garnishes like gummy worms, candy "eyeballs," or other candies to play up the spookiness factor.
  • When pouring the grenadine over the bar spoon, go slow! It's easiest to control the look of the finished cocktail if you drizzle rather than pour.
  • We like this served in a coupe glass, but a martini glass works jus as well.

Cook Mode (Keep screen awake)

Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. vodka (1 fluid oz.)

  • 2 Tbsp. sour apple schnapps (1 fluid oz.)

  • Ice

  • 3 Tbsp. (1 1/2 fluid oz.) hard apple cider (such as Angry Orchard), chilled

  • 1 tsp. grenadine

  • Apple slice, for garnish (optional)

Directions

  1. Mix Spirits

In a mixing glass, combine vodka and sour apple schnapps. Fill glass with ice. Stir until chilled, about 1 minute. Strain into a coupe glass, and top with hard apple cider.

  2. Add Garnishes

Slowly cascade grenadine down a bar spoon inserted into the glass, or slowly pour down the side of the glass, allowing it to settle at the bottom. Serve immediately, garnished with an apple slice if desired
