Path of Terraria turns the indie game into an ARPG with a story and endgame maps

As exciting as the looming Terraria 1.4.5 update is, my attention has just been stolen away by modder 'ScottieKnowz' and their imminent open beta launch for Path of Terraria. This hugely impressive full-conversion mod takes Re-Logic's beloved indie game and transforms it into an ARPG inspired by Path of Exile. There's no element spared; expect a full story progression, quests, classes, randomized loot drops with affixes, crafting currency, a passive skill tree, and a full endgame with PoE-style mapping. There are even online leaderboards and the option to trade.

Path of Terraria has been in closed testing for a while via Discord, but ScottieKnowz is now preparing to open the doors to the wider public, and it already looks set to rival the likes of Thorium and Calamity on our best Terraria mods list. You start out your journey in this overhauled version of one of the best indie games by choosing one of four main character classes: melee, ranged, magic, or summoner. Each of these has its own mentor NPC in the starting town of Ravencrest (yes, there are towns as well), who will send you on your first class quest.

You'll earn experience and level up as you fight and finish missions, earning points that can be spent to unlock new class abilities or enhance your proficiency through the passive skill tree. This isn't quite as overwhelmingly sized as PoE's, but there's still an impressive web of talents that allow you to craft all manner of specialized or hybrid builds. On top of this, each individual skill comes with its own augmentation tree, reminiscent of Last Epoch, that can enhance its potency or even completely alter how it works.

While equipment has always been a big part of Terraria, all weapons, armor, and accessories now work much more like an ARPG, with common, magic, rare, and unique drops that come with a certain number of affixes. Some offer additional attacks or effects, and you'll earn numerous crafting shards that let you enhance your gear in a way that'll instantly feel familiar if you're a PoE 1 veteran. There's even an 'Echoing Shard' that lets you clone an item, Mirror of Kalandra style, to preserve it while you gamble on some riskier rolls.

You'll need all the power you can earn, because Path of Terraria's major encounters work a little differently than traditional Terraria bosses. You enter a unique 'boss domain' with a set number of lives dependent on the player count, and have to bring your opponent down before they run out. Once you reach the endgame, you unlock the ability to go into special standalone 'maps' much like Path of Exile. These can be crafted and rerolled, and each opens a unique zone with enemy modifiers and boosted loot drops.

Path of Terraria can be played fully solo, but ScottieKnowz is also releasing a separate version called 'Path of Terraria Online' that includes leaderboards and trade. The former will show who's progressed the most through the levels, while the latter allows you to list any powerful items that don't suit your play style, setting a price in crafting currency for other players to purchase them.

The Path of Terraria open beta begins Friday August 8. In preparation for the launch, ScottieKnowz has temporarily halted invites to the closed beta, but you can visit the official website or join the Discord to stay up to date with its progress.
