Don't Forget to Pack These 7 Picnic Essentials for Fuss-Free Summer Outings

A summer picnic is one of the most nostalgic (and cost-effective!) ways to make warm-weather memories, whether you plan a get together with close friends, a couples’ afternoon, or a meaningful solo date. While some picnic necessities are obvious—even if you don’t bring a traditional basket, you know you need a container for transporting food and serveware—there are some extras you may not think of that can end up making a difference in throwing a seamless, memorable outing.

As you prep the sandwiches and pack up, remember to bring these unexpected essentials on your next picnic.

1. A Bottle of Sunscreen

Even if you’re planning to picnic in the shade, be sure to apply sunscreen before you leave the house (and bring a bottle along in case you need to reapply). Nothing spoils summer fun quicker than sunburn.

“Sunscreen has been a big win because when you go to the park, you can't guarantee your perfect spot is available,” says Hannah Fuchigami, the founder of Picnic Party Seattle, which hosts over 100 picnic events each year. “More than likely, someone in your crew could use a reapplication on a hot afternoon anyways.”

2. Hand Sanitizer and Pest Protection

Though you may have access to restrooms if you’re picnicking at a public park, you may not want to make the hike just to wash your hands (and if you choose a more remote spot, sinks and soap might not be available at all). A small bottle of hand sanitizer can keep germs at bay without needing to take a single step.

And don’t forget to bring something to ward off bugs—and in some cases, hand sanitizer might be able to pull double-duty.

“Lavender essential oil or hand sanitizer helps with gnats and adds a calming sensory layer,” says Kyla Malkani, an expert in floral and table design. “The bugs hate the scent of lavender, and it's a nicer scent to enjoy while picnicking than harsher bug sprays.”

To be ultra-picnic prepared, pack both a bottle of hand sanitizer and a bug spray or scent that will keep pests away. Even some candles, such as citronella, can help repel bugs while also setting the mood for a cozy evening picnic.

3. Serving Tray

Plates, napkins, and silverware are likely already on your packing list (whether you choose disposable options, or go for an upscale picnic with cutlery and linen napkins), but a serving tray might get overlooked. You don’t have to be planning a full-on fancy picnic for this tool to come in handy—even a plastic tray brings function.

“A lightweight tray keeps drinks stable on uneven grass and makes the spread feel styled,” Malkani says. For larger groups, it’s also a perfect way to spread out finger foods like veggies or charcuterie for everyone to help themselves or even to stack up sandwiches for the crowd.

4. A Cute Centerpiece

Want to instantly elevate your picnic into a stylish gathering? Be sure to bring a centerpiece, like a bouquet of flowers or even individual stems.

“Pre-arranged bud vases or a single-stem bouquet adds an instant sense of occasion,” Malkani says. “I love to secure them in a small box or tucked inside the basket lid.” Especially outdoors, a picnic is the perfect time to use a few cut flowers from your garden, or any other wildflower-like blooms.

5. Condiments and Other Finishing Touches

Along with a cooler packed with ice and cold drinks, toss in your condiment bottles (or even spare packets from takeout) in case anyone needs to sauce up their snacks. If you’re planning an elegant picnic with a more elevated menu, other garnishes like fresh herbs instantly makes it feel upscale.

“Bring a small pouch of sea salt, chili flakes, or lemon wedges for finishing touches on snacks and spreads,” Malkani recommends.

6. Music and Games

If you’re going to the effort of planning a whole picnic, make a day out of it! Bring a small speaker to play music in the background, and bring a few lawn games like bocce ball or cornhole. Pocket-size games can also help keep the conversation flowing and give everyone a post-picnic activity, especially if you’re in the mood to relax in the shade.

“A deck of cards never hurts either,” Fuchigami says. “Cards bring a relaxed, imaginative atmosphere. Whether it's a picnic date or a larger party, it's always fun to have a prop like this that you can pull out and get everyone involved in.”

7. A Camera for Memories

Even though most everyone has a camera through their phone at all times, it can be fun to put your devices away and enjoy the moment. That’s why a polaroid camera can be the cutest way to keep everyone present and also document the day.

“The polaroid camera is a surprisingly delightful experience, because it doubles as an activity and a souvenir,” Fuchigami says. If you’re picnicking with a group of friends, photos that develop on the spot that everyone can take home with them right after serve as a sweet way to remember time spent together, no distractions.
