Tabletop adaptations are rife since the success of Baldur's Gate 3. Larian's RPG masterpiece will go down in history as one of the best videogames ever made, but it's unfair to measure every successor against it. Not every TTRPG wanting to make the jump has the financial power of Hasbro, the experience of Larian, and the backing of Tencent to make it succeed. I'm ready for the deluge of TTRPG adaptations with smaller scopes and equal amounts of creativity, and Starfinder: Afterlight ( from Spanish studio Epictellers Entertainment) is hoping it can find its niche as another great turn-based RPG.

The Starfinder TTRPG from Paizo Entertainment was published in 2017, and quickly garnered popularity for its space fantasy setting and the versatility to manipulate the rules to whatever game you wanted. Cyberpunk espionage? Sure. Dead Space-esque zombie thriller? You got it.

Starfinder won the 2018 Origins Award for fan favorite RPG a year later, and fans will hope that the videogame adaptation can follow in its footsteps. Epictellers promises that Starfinder: Afterlight will be a story-rich game "full of danger and adventure," but how will it stack up against some of the best space games already orbiting our Steam libraries?

For those unfamiliar with the Starfinder setting, the original TTRPG uses a D20 system (like Dungeons and Dragons) to simulate its storytelling. We don't know if Afterlight will follow the Baldur's Gate 3 and Disco Elysium route of having visible die rolls or if it'll crunch the numbers in the background instead, but that's relatively unimportant.

Assemble your crew of misfits to tackle enemies with mystical powers, find your lost captain, and stop the imminent obliteration of the galaxy. Epictellers already promises unique story arcs for each of your companions and interesting combat that blends laser guns and space magic into a rollicking science-fiction adventure.

Starfinder: Afterlight is set to launch in early access in 2026. You can check out the Kickstarter, which launches later this year, here.

If you can't wait until next year to get your roleplaying goodness, check out our picks for the best RPG games here (and end up replaying Citizen Sleeper). Alternatively, maybe it's time for another playthrough of Baldur's Gate 3, mods and all.
