New Terraria 1.4.5 update makes getting around the world faster, and much cooler

Getting around in Terraria 1.4.5 is about to be much, much more fun. Over the years, we've gained all manner of ways to zip across the world, from Hermes Boots and wings to the iconic minecart. Now, a new contender has joined the fray, and it might be my favorite yet. While the newly posted Terraria State of the Game for the end of July doesn't have a 1.4.5 release date for us, it does include two of the most exciting spoilers we've had in a while, unveiling a new RC Car and hinting at a particularly intriguing new world seed.

Every playthrough of Terraria is different, but all of my worlds share one constant that's even more reliable than the stark 'residence box' my NPCs often have to put up with. Floating high above ground level, a minecart track running from ocean to ocean is one of the most reliable ways to cross the Terraria map. Now, however, it's got serious competition, as one of our best sandbox games adds a new car that you can use to navigate the map in style.

Inspired by the Kwad Racer Drone, the RC Car lets you zoom across the world at speed. It can drive along the ground, but is also capable of riding up the back walls. To show this off, Re-Logic demonstrates it in action speeding up and along a back-wall race track (even jumping across small gaps along the way). The transition from ground to wall looks pretty slick and seamless, although I can't help but be reminded of Terraria's unsettling spider swarms when I see it.

I don't think I'll ever use a traditional minecart again; while there are certainly some benefits to the relative ease of getting back onto a rail, this option is simply too cool to pass up. Sure, it might not be quite as simple as grappling back onto the track if you slip off (although this could probably be solved with some well-placed track furniture), but making it a back wall should actually mean it interferes less with your general mobility.

Re-Logic is also hard at work on polishing patch 1.4.5, and Murphy says, "This month has seen quite a bit of effort focused on one of the new unique world seeds. It is indeed a pesky one, given the odd ways it seems to interact with the worldgen." While the team isn't quite ready to show it off as a result, that detail has me very intrigued. We've had all manner of custom seeds that create strange effects in the past, so the fact that the developer is having to wrangle this one quite so firmly suggests it's especially distinctive.

Finally, we get a glimpse at some more upcoming furniture sets, this time featuring the twin biomes of Crimson and Corruption, and they look fantastic. You can take a look below, and I don't think I've ever seen such a compelling argument as this for integrating both of the hostile, spreading environments into a single world.

As mentioned up to, there's still no confirmation of the Terraria 1.4.5 release date yet. "Still no dates to share, which we know will be disappointing to everyone," Murphy says, repeating that the team is "doing our very best to get to that day as quickly as possible." Fortunately, these spoilers have given me my regular dose of reinvigoration, and Murphy adds, "hopefully it will not be too much longer before we can give you that launch window."
