With modern technology, mobile games can be just as intricate as their PC counterparts, so it's no surprise that some of the biggest games on Steam are cross-platform compatible with handheld devices. As someone who typically prefers playing with a mouse, however, I'm very glad for confirmation that Age of Empires Mobile is now coming to PC. The newest AoE game might not be Age of Empires 5, but it's still a very robust version of the iconic strategy game series, boasting millions of players since its launch in 2024. Even if that's not for you, there's also some good news on new updates for AoE 2 DE, AoE 4, and Age of Mythology: Retold.
In a giant new blog post, World's Edge and Xbox Game Studios cover everything that's going on with the AoE series, which currently has three very active entries. The most notable of these is confirmation that Age of Empires Mobile will be making its way to PC, complete with all the features you'd expect including optimized keyboard and mouse controls, a more PC-friendly UI, enhanced 4K visuals, and integration with both Steam and Xbox Live. Alongside this news, however, the team has a couple of teasers for three more of its best strategy games.
Following the launch of Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition's biggest update ever and the arrival of its Three Kingdoms DLC, there's still more to come. The next AoE 2 DE expansion will be coming "later this year," and while we aren't told what it is, the team does share "a couple of images that chronicle this great upcoming adventure." That rather unsubtle tease certainly sounds like an Alexander the Great Chronicles pack to me.
Age of Empires 4 is also due to get some more additions following the release of Knights of Cross and Rose. We don't get quite as explicit a tease here, although we are told that it will come "in the Fall of 2025," and that it will feature a new game mode. "While there will be plenty of the Age of Empires 4 gameplay you know and love to revel in, you might recognize core elements from other games making their debut as well," World's Edge hints.
Finally, the developer turns its attention to Age of Mythology: Retold, which will be getting a new expansion, Heavenly Spear, on Tuesday September 30. This spins the fantasy game into the realm of Japanese mythology, introducing a new pantheon, a 12-mission campaign, and fresh mythic powers. If you're eager to jump in at launch, there's now a 15% preorder discount available if you buy Heavenly Spear before it releases.
If you're eager to learn more about any of these, it seems like you'll want to keep your eyes on Gamescom. The wonderfully named Age of Empires Mobile: PC Edition will be playable at the AoE booth in Cologne, and the event is also mentioned multiple times throughout the blog as a great place to watch out for more details on the other games.
I'm certainly eager to give AoE Mobile a bit more time; I liked the little I tried of it on my phone, but I'll be much more comfortable enjoying it on PC while we await news of a potential full-fledged sequel. In the meantime, take a look through the best RTS games in 2025, and maybe consider an upgrade to the best gaming keyboard, an oft-underrated upgrade that will ensure your inputs are always clean.
