Christian Counseling Can Save Your Marriage

By: Vivian Bricker

“Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance” (Proverbs 1:5).

Christian marriage counseling can save marriages and help build your marriage from the ground up. Even if you have gone through something traumatic, such as infidelity, know that a Christian marriage counselor can help you. Infidelity is extremely difficult to work through, but if you and your spouse both want to repair the relationship, you can build a stronger marriage with the help of God and a marriage counselor. If you and your spouse have recently gone through infidelity or have gone through it in the past, it is important to talk about it in therapy and heal any wounds that might still be there.

Even if you have not gone through infidelity within your marriage, you can still go to Christian marriage counseling with your spouse. Things don’t have to be bad before you talk with a counselor. You can speak with a marriage counselor to help prevent future problems and to learn better communication. Sadly, many couples struggle with communication, which can and will negatively impact a marriage.

Rather than allowing miscommunication to affect your marriage, you and your spouse can start learning better communication through the help of a marriage counselor. Marriage counseling does not need to be a taboo subject within the Christian community. Instead, it needs to be promoted and endorsed. Christian marriage counseling will help you and your spouse connect on a deeper level, learn better communication skills, and grow. Don’t turn down the opportunity to do marriage counseling, as it can bring positive changes to your marriage.

My parents used to talk about marriage counseling because their marriage was always on the rocks. I always thought my parents would get a divorce because of all of the yelling, screaming, and fights. At times, it didn’t even seem like my parents liked each other, much less loved each other. I can’t help but to wonder if marriage counseling would have helped them. While it is good to talk about marriage counseling, we actually need to plan the appointment and go weekly.

This calls for a heart of intention. Both you and your spouse need to carve out time in your week to go to marriage counseling together. This might mean using your lunch break from work or leaving an hour early to meet your spouse at counseling. While there will be risks you have to take in order to meet with a counselor, they are worth it to help cultivate your marriage. Choose to place your spouse as your priority rather than work, hobbies, or your own friends.

Proverbs 1:5 tells us, “Let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance.” As this passage of Scripture tells us, it is good to seek out advice and guidance from others. Within the context of today’s devotional, we need to see the importance of seeking out wisdom and discernment from God as well as a Christian marriage counselor. God wants you to bring all of your concerns to Him and He will give you guidance.

God is wiser than anyone else, and He can provide you with guidance. Go to Him in prayer, present your worries to Him, and wait on His answer. In the meantime, follow God’s teachings in Proverbs 1:5. Seek guidance, advice, and help from trustworthy individuals. A Christian marriage counselor can be this person and truly be an answer to prayer. God can answer our prayers in various ways, and sometimes, this can be done through another believer.

If you are still in doubt, bring your uncertainties to God. Ask Him to give you clear directions and equip you with discernment. God’s work in our lives can go beyond our wildest dreams, and He will answer our prayers in His own unique ways. Give marriage counseling a chance and see if this is where God is leading you. A few sessions might be difficult, but soon, you will find it a very important part of your week. It will help your marriage to grow stronger and more full of love.

God wants what is best for your marriage, and at this time, it might be marriage counseling. Try it out for a few weeks and see how you and your spouse feel after each session. It will bring many issues into the light and help you get to know your spouse’s emotions in a deeper way. As you decide your next steps, go to God in prayer.

Prayer:

“Dear God, help me and my spouse to decide if Christian marriage counseling is the way to go. I have been wondering about it for many years and I think it is time. Please help marriage counseling to go well, to build our marriage, and to make it grow. I trust You with all things. Amen.”
