Steam's most underrated space RPG, Star Valor, just got a new tower defense mode

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there really is nothing better in space games than the freedom to choose a ship and set off to explore the stars. No Man's Sky, Eve Online, and even the controversial Star Citizen are often the first examples to come to mind, but sometimes the best sci-fi adventures can be found in unexpected places, like Star Valor. And now, the underrated Steam game has grown, with a new base building DLC that allows you to expand your empire even further.

Star Valor has proved a pretty popular hit on Steam since it first launched in 2022, wracking up an 89% positive rating from Steam users and 'very positive' reviews. In this space RPG, you set your own course by piloting a ship through a vast procedurally-generated open world in a bid to acquire fame and fortune.

Like all the best space games, Star Valor is also packed with thrilling spaceship combat, from dogfights to massive fleet battles. You decide how to engage, just as you can choose your role on your ship, upgrades, character abilities, factions, and the crew you eventually hire. As your ship grows, you can also decide to become a fleet commander and bring other ships under your command, expanding your reach across the galaxy.

And arriving to help you grow your blossoming empire even further is Star Valor's new DLC. It introduces the ability to manage and build bases with a range of different functions, like weapon turrets that can provide defenses or mining stations for extracting resources from asteroids.

There are other bases to be built, like standard stations with basic services like ship repair and NPC trading, production stations that are like factories, laboratories and agristations, power plants and solar arrays, beacons that shine a light in dark corners of the galaxy or set spawn positions, and jumpgates.

And that's not all. A new tower defense game mode has also arrived in the DLC. This mode has you begin the game with an engineer ship equipped with a repair beam and basic materials to build a base, and then battle waves of enemies. You can also trade with NPCs to continue to grow your ship and base - if you manage to survive the hordes of aliens intent on destroying you.

The latest DLC will also add two ship models called the Beaver and Raccoon, an unlockable special character, perks and achievements, and so much more. You can read the full info on all that's included in the DLC here.
