Trying to elevate your outdoor cooking game with a new Blackstone griddle but don't know how to season it? You're in the right place. If you've seen anyone cooking on a dark flattop griddle without anything sticking to the surface, that's because it's properly seasoned. Just like you need to season your cast iron pans regularly, you also need to season your Blackstone to help make it last.

It's quite a simple process, and we've got chef and expert Nathan Lippy from Blackstone Products to guide us. Once you know how to season a Blackstone, you'll be able to keep its nonstick surface and continue cooking fajitas, fried rice, pancakes, and more with ease.

What Is Seasoning?

Seasoning a griddle or flattop cooking surface is a process that involves using oil to make a protective, nonstick layer. Once you have a well-seasoned griddle, it will help prevent rust and can make it easier to cook on.

How to Season a Blackstone Griddle

If you've wondered why you should season your Blackstone, it's to allow oil to bond to the griddle's steel surface, creating an even, nonstick cooktop. Seasoning will also prevent any rust from forming. To get started, follow these simple steps:

Step 1: Wash the Surface

If you've just unboxed a new Blackstone, clean the surface thoroughly with soapy water and rinse clean.

Step 2: Preheat the Griddle

Turn on the burners up to high heat and allow the griddle to get nice and hot for about 10 to 15 minutes. Once you see the top starting to brown, turn the burners off.

Step 3: Coat Griddle with Oil

Using a paper towel, apply a thin layer (2 to 3 tablespoons for large griddles) of griddle seasoning or neutral, high-heat cooking oil to the griddle. Rub the oil into every section of the griddle, including the rim and the sides.

Step 4: Turn on the Burners

Turn the burners back on high, and heat the oil until it begins to produce smoke (this is the smoke point). This should take about 15 minutes, but could take up to 30 minutes. Once the smoke is gone, turn the burners off.

Step 5: Repeat Process

Allow the surface to become cool to the touch once again before repeating the oiling and heating process. Apply another thin layer of oil, then heat again until smoking, then cool. Repeat for 2 to 3 rounds and then turn off the griddle and allow to cool completely.

How Often to Season Blackstone

Once you've done the process of seasoning your Blackstone, you should always clean your griddle after every use and apply a thin layer of oil each time to reseason and protect the cooking surface. "Keeping a thin and shiny layer of cooking oil on the surface of your griddle will protect it from humidity and ensure that your Blackstone is always in prime condition," Lippy says. If you find the Blackstone surface starts to lose its nonstick properties, simply reseason using the steps above.

The Best Way to Keep a Blackstone Seasoned

The easiest way to make sure you keep a seasoned Blackstone? Cook on it! "Cooking on your Blackstone 1 to 2 times a week will help maintain a good seasoning," Lippy says. "Keeping your griddle clean and dry are also important."

That's it! You've now got a seasoned Blackstone Store the griddle in a cool, dry place to prevent rust, Be sure to use a heavy-duty canvas cover to protect the Blackstone from scratches, dust, and other damage.
