Classic CRPG Avernum 4 gets an ambitious remake after huge Kickstarter success

There's been a recent resurgence in remaking the classics. We've seen the likes of Dawn of War, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, and Tomb Raider all receive a glow up, and now it looks like this popular CRPG is set to follow in their footsteps after a successful Kickstarter campaign. Avernum 4, from the developers behind Geneforge, is getting a remake, and it's due to be released soon.

There have been plenty of games released in recent years that have landed in our best RPGs list, but sometimes there's an itch that only the classics can scratch. Avernum 4 was originally released in 2005 as the latest addition to the popular gaming franchise, and now it's getting a remake. Welcome, Avernum 4: Greed and Glory.

It's all thanks to a successful Kickstarter campaign that was launched in August 2024. After attracting over 1,000 backers and nearly $100,000, developer Spiderware Software has today dropped a new trailer and confirmed that the game is set to be released later this year.

Founder Jeff Vogel writes in an update on the Kickstarter page that the game is "almost done". He states that more info is yet to come, adding, "We're just picking off the final pesky details (like documentation). Our first squad of elite testers has picked through the game very carefully, and it's solid. The balance is tight and exciting. We hope to have the Windows version in testing by the end of the month, and then we'll be able to ramp up to an October release."

It looks like the remake is doing more than upgrading graphics; Spiderware Software outlines on its campaign page how it's revising and expanding "every location, line of text, sound and graphic asset, and encounter," as well as adding new adventures, storylines, abilities, and so much more.

When the game comes out, players can expect to explore and conquer a vast underworld where riches, fame, and even death awaits you. In true turn-based RPG fashion, you'll need to build a party, master turn-based combat, and fight your way through dungeons to uncover the true secrets and knowledge at the heart of Avernum.

But the journey won't be easy, as multiple factions will be vying (and dying) for your support, and you'll have to choose carefully who to support and who to let down. Packed full of fantasy lore, you can bring peace to the land or lead it into profitable ruin.
