AMD is reportedly looking to seriously take the fight to Nvidia with its next-gen gaming GPU, with the latest rumor apparently revealing some of the key AMD Radeon RX 10090 XT specs. If this leak is true, then AMD is cooking up an absolutely killer graphics card, with a massive 36GB of GDDR7 VRAM, and 154 compute units, making it massively more powerful than the acclaimed Radeon RX 9070 XT, which only has 64 compute units.

As we found in our AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT review, RDNA 4 sees the company catching up with Nvidia in many areas, including decent AI-based upscaling and ray tracing performance. However, the lack of a high-end GPU means Nvidia has the top end of our guide to buying the best graphics card all to itself. AMD currently has nothing to challenge the RTX 5090, but that situation could apparently change with the next-gen GPU lineup.

This latest rumor comes from regular tech leaker Moore's Law is Dead (MLID), which you can see in the video below, so take it with the appropriate grain of salt, especially as the launch of these new GPUs is likely to be years away. However, MLID claims to have seen several documents and spoken to multiple AMD sources to back up this leak, and if there's any truth to it, then AMD isn't planning on skimping with its next-gen gaming GPUs.

The top-end new GPU in the leaked product stack is codenamed AT0 according to MLID, and it will mainly be used for AI applications, where graphics cards will have a super-wide 512-bit bus, like the RTX 5090, as well as PCIe 6.0 support and 184 compute units. However, there's also a single desktop gaming GPU listed in the AT0 section of the table, which we've reproduced below.

As you can see, this new gaming GPU, which MLID speculates could be called the AMD Radeon RX 10090 XT (though I think it's more likely to have a cleaner name such as the Radeon X90 XT), will reportedly cut down the compute units to 154 and the memory bus width to 384-bit, while cutting costs by only using the PCIe 5.0 interface. However, the GPU could also come equipped with a massive 36GB of 36Gbps GDDR7 VRAM - comparatively, the RTX 5090 has 32GB of 28Gbps memory, so while the latter might have a wider bus, the new AMD GPU could still offer a massive amount of bandwidth.

MLID also claims to have seen an AMD document that "directly says that AT0 gaming flagship is targeting the RTX 6090," and while we obviously can't guess the performance of Nvidia's next-gen flagship just yet, MLID's "scratch math" puts the performance at 264% of the RTX 4080's pace, based on the mumber of compute units.

In addition, MLID says that the GPU range will be fleshed out for mid-range and budget GPUs too, with the new AT2 chip apparently being the equivalent of the Navi 48 chip used in the Radeon RX 9070. This chip, according to MLID, is likely to be used in the next-gen Xbox or PlayStation. According to MLID, the new Radeon RX 10070 XT, if that's the naming scheme AMD uses, could have 18GB of GDDR7 VRAM and, like its predecessor, 64 compute units. MLID claims to have seen an AMD document that claims this new GPU is targeting 120% of RTX 4080 performance while hitting a $550 price.

The new GPUs will reportedly be manufactured using TSMC's cutting-edge 3nm process, enabling AMD to pack so many compute units into one die, while also reducing the power draw. The table in the video puts the Radeon RX 10090 XT top-spec GPU's power draw at just 380W, but MLID cautions that this could just be a placeholder, and that other, more powerful cards based on the same GPU may well draw more power. If these specs rumors are true, that 380W figure certainly looks fanciful to me.

"The vibe I'm getting from behind the scenes is that AMD is incredibly excited to go for the crown again," says Tom from MLID, and I'd also love to see some decent competition in the high-end GPU market. According to MLID, the new GPUs are planned to launch in 2027, so we have a good wait yet, and a lot can change in that time.
