Despite a new update, Wuchang Fallen Feathers still has performance issues on PC

It's been a rough start to life for Wuchang Fallen Feathers on PC, with developer Leenzee already pushing out a performance patch to counter the laundry list of issues that players are encountering. We jumped into the update to see if the roguelike runs any better, and while it looks promising, it's still far from perfect.

We've already tested this new Dark Souls-inspired RPG for our best Wuchang Fallen Feathers settings guide, which you can check to see which settings we are running this patch on, too. We expected there to be some issues based on the Wuchang Fallen Feathers system requirements, which were determined using Nvidia DLSS and AMD FSR, but the game is in worse shape than we feared. Even if your gaming PC is rocking one of the best graphics card picks from our buying guide, the chances are you're still going to struggle even after this patch.

Wuchang Fallen Feathers patch 1.3 includes the following performance-related fixes:

• Low Latency Mode is now a toggle and is disabled by default.
• Supersampling resolution limits have been adjusted on select GPU models to prevent unintended performance degradation.
• GPUs with 8GB or less VRAM now have memory-saving optimization applied across all texture quality levels.
• GPUs with more than 8GB of VRAM have this memory-saving option only on the Low texture quality setting.

The above changes are designed to improve stability and reduce crashes or stuttering related to insufficient video memory, and we did see some hefty jumps in frame rates in our testing, particularly at 2,560 x 1,440. However, there are still significant problems with this game's performance on PC right now.

Starting with something positive, the issues I ran into with the 2,560 x 1,440 resolution being blurry are now fixed, and running the game at this resolution now works as intended. In fact, testing at 1440p in general was much better, with the previous average frame rate of 69fps now jumping up to 120fps. The 1% low has enjoyed a similar boost from 29fps to 49fps.

Unfortunately, in our testing at 1,920 x 1,080, while the average frame rate did jump up from 85fps to 129fps, the 1% low only came up marginally from 45fps to 49fps. That's still passable, but given that we needed DLSS and frame generation to achieve this figure, it's less than ideal.

At 4K, the average frame rate is up to 58fps from 49fps, and the 1% low increased from 13fps to 22fps. The biggest issue across all resolutions, however, is an increase in the stuttering that appears to be caused when moving between large areas or when the game appears to be loading content.

While this stuttering has become more frequent compared to our initial testing, it's not so frequent as to be completely disruptive. I'm sure more updates will be coming to target PC performance, but this patch won't leave everyone satisfied that the game is in much better shape than before.
