Sequel to a popular Warcraft 3 mod, this fantasy tower defense game is now free

Tower defense games are a mainstay of PC gaming, testing your ability to strategize on your feet. Plenty of examples have stood the test of time, from Sanctum 2 to Orcs Must Die, but if there's one more recent release that stands out, it's Legion TD 2. And there's no better time to give it a shot, as it's currently free on the Epic Games Store for the next week.

The sequel to one of the most popular Warcraft 3 mods, one that inspired auto battlers like Teamfight Tactics and Autochess, Legion TD 2 has long sat in our best tower defense games list; even almost four years after its 1.0 launch, it's still well worth returning to, with an 86% positive Steam rating. As with all great tower defense games, the premise is fairly straightforward: build an army, protect your king, and defeat your enemy before they destroy you.

What makes Legion TD 2 distinct is its wealth of combination possibilities. With a hundred strong army to build, you'll need to choose from eight legions and over 100 different fighters, deciding between those that offer early advantages and others that facilitate late-game synergies. There's also a dedicated co-op campaign for up to eight players.

Legion TD 2 is free on the Epic Games Store between Thursday July 24 and Thursday July 31, and it's yours to keep forever once claimed. Head here to get it while the deal lasts.
