Callum Self's Avatar

One of my first experiences playing Rimworld saw my colonist, Mr. Longbottom, hunt a seemingly normal squirrel. Little did I know, it was a rabid animal that not only wiped out my fledgling adventurer but also his attempted savior, suitably named 'Dave.' This is a small taste of what happens in Tynan Sylvester's beloved simulation game, and if you too want to be murdered by a rabid fluffball, Rimworld and its DLCs are currently on sale.

Starting life as a tiny indie game funded via Kickstarter, Rimworld has blossomed into one of the most popular colony sims. While its management is, of course, a core component, for me the thing that makes Rimworld so special is the myriad stories you weave with every playthrough: no two are the same.

Alone, Rimworld can offer you hundreds of hours of fun; it's just one reason why it's among the best PC games. However, the exceptional DLCs also add plenty more to the experience. Anomaly turns Rimworld into a nightmarish adventure, perfect for fans of horror games, including cultists, an undead corpse that follows your colonists, and more. Though it's not just the physical threats but also the feeling of paranoia and constant fear that make it so special.

There's also Odyssey, the latest DLC, which introduces the gravship as a new mode of transport. You can't travel off-world, but it completely changes the core experience, while also giving you something to work towards. Then there's all of the one-of-a-kind weapon variants that'll give your colonists the chance to fight back against the planet's most dangerous threats.

Those are just two of the DLCs, and they're arguably my favorite, but Royalty, Ideology, and Biotech are all worth picking up. If you're keen to grab the full experience, Rimworld and its five expansions are up to 28% off right now at Fanatical. That may not sound like a big deal, but Rimworld rarely gets discounts, and especially not ones this deep.

For example, you could get the game for just $25.19 / £20.51, while Royalty only costs $15.39 / £12.31 right now. Alternatively, you could get Anomaly and Odyssey for $19.99 / £15.99 and $21.74 / £17.39, respectively. Personally, I'd grab the base game and see if you enjoy it before going back to grab the DLCs that you find most exciting. My recommendation would be Anomaly, but that's because I'm a horror fanatic.

If you've already played Ludeon's Studios' colony sim and are looking for something new yet familiar, we have a list of all the best games like Rimworld. Alternatively, there's plenty of upcoming PC games on the horizon, so hopefully we'll see some other releases join the genre in the near future.
