I'm going to have to upgrade to Windows 11. That much is now inevitable, and not just to ensure my own peace of mind as Microsoft ends security upgrades. Square Enix confirms that its critically acclaimed MMORPG FF14 will no longer support Windows 10 PCs from October. While you might still be able to play, the developer warns that it will no longer provide support for any problems that arise as a result.

The day was always going to come; I've been putting off the upgrade to Windows 11 ever since Microsoft began pushing it. Partly, I was eager to ensure continued compatibility with all the software I use. Mostly, I just didn't want to deal with it. Of course, I will be making the change soon enough, because I won't take the risk of using my day-to-day PC on an old, unsupported operating system. But Final Fantasy 14 has now given me another firm kick up the backside to get it sorted.

I've been a big enthusiast for the current state of FF14 - it's not without flaws, but I stand by my Final Fantasy 14 Dawntrail review. In many regards, from the world design to the flow of its battle content, one of our long-running best MMORPGs has never been better. So Square Enix's confirmation that "Final Fantasy 14 support for Windows 10 will end on October 14, 2025" is enough to get me to finally upgrade.

The developer says its decision comes in the wake of Microsoft calling an end to Windows 10 support on the same day, explaining, "We have found that continuing support for this operating system is a difficult proposition." It notes that you will likely be able to continue playing the MMO on Windows 10 systems after this date, but that it "will as a general rule no longer be able to provide support for problems arising as a result of the operating system."

Square Enix says it "may respond to requests for technical support regarding Windows 10 issues after the end of support, but such informal support will be limited, on a case-by-case basis, and is not guaranteed." Given that we're expecting patch 7.3 in early August, I might just have to fast-track my update to this month so that I'm not left scrabbling at a time when I'd rather be enjoying the new alliance raid.

Keep your eye on the FF14 server status for any upcoming maintenance times if you're trying to decide when to make the switch. While you're at it, take a look at our picks for the best gaming keyboard, which should ensure you never let those rotations slip.
