There's no doubt that Skull and Bones was sailing through rough seas at launch. But, credit where it's due, Ubisoft hasn't abandoned its long-in-development, 'quad-A' pirate multiplayer game. Another new update has just arrived, which includes - among other things - a large ship and a faction war to delve into. Even better, it's currently free to play for the weekend, with an 80% discount on Steam if you fancy sticking with it.
The launch reception to Skull and Bones was fairly brutal, and at the time, it seemed like a live service flop for the ages that'd soon walk the plank. But the pirate game is still around over a full year later and receiving regular updates.
Surprising most, Ubisoft announced plans to provide a second year of support for the title, outlining a huge Year 2 roadmap back in April. Now the Year 2 Season 2 update, Oaths of War, is here, seeing pirates setting sail for the Indian Ocean.
A new large ship has pulled into port. The Frigate is armed with devastating broadside capabilities, dual auxiliary slots, and fleet-augmenting benefits. A brand new weapon is also available on the ship, the aptly named Demolition Mortar.
Better batten down the hatches, though, as a new faction war is also coming mid-season. The Compagnie Royale and the Dutch Merchant Company are fighting over Contested Zones, and it's time to choose a side. But be wary, matey, your choices might come back to bite you in Season 3.
There are also bigger forts, known as Megaforts, to conquer. You'll need to strategise carefully to take down a mini-boss and a defending fleet to emerge triumphant and earn that pirate booty.
Then there are limited time events, ship campaigns for pirate legends, and a new Smuggler Pass available throughout Season 2. So it's a pretty good time to give a shot, especially as the game is currently free to play this weekend on Steam.
Skull and Bones Year 2 Season 2, Oaths of War, is out now, and the game is free to play on Steam and Ubisoft Connect from Thursday July 17 to Monday July 21. It's also currently 80% off on Steam until July 24, and for anyone taking the plunge and buying the game after the free weekend, your progress will carry over.
