How do the Umamusume stats work? With a whole career playthrough on the line if you mismanage your horsegirl's stats before a big race, every turn matters. Misunderstand how a particular stat affects your trainee's overall strategy, and you're sure to run into problems sooner or later, cutting a promising career run short.

Just starting your dream career as an anime horse girl trainer? Check out our Umamusume tier list before you progress too far. While it's a generous game, rerolling for some early S-tier runners can make for an easier time. And if you're already deep in your tenth career run, Umamusume Pretty Derby codes help at any stage of play. We suggest using the Carats on some new Support Cards.

How do Umamusume stats work?

How you grow and manage your racer's Speed, Stamina, Power, Guts, and Wit stats in Umamusume contributes a great deal to your horse girl's success in a race. But it's far from the full picture.

Stats more strongly affect certain phases of the race—early, mid, late, and last.

Though you'll spend most of your time in Career mode choosing between one of five training types, even your Support Card deck will play a role in how your Uma's stats grow after each session.

Stack your deck with cards that only benefit stats your Trainee doesn't stand to gain much from, and you'll only hinder their chances of reaching the Uma Finale.

Exactly when each phase transitions to the next differs depending on the total distance of the race. Just look at how the race progress bar is divided during a race to see when one stage gives way to the next.

All Umamusume stats and what they do

Each stat caps at 1200 at launch. This limit will increase in future updates, unlocking a few new mechanics that will ultimately change how Umamusume stats work.

For now, we're focusing only on what's currently in the game. We won't confuse you with talk on how a stat will change in an update, potentially six months down the line.

Speed

Speed affects the top speed your Uma can reach during the Last Spurt phase of a race.

Speed can be influenced by race conditions (weather) and the type of terrain if those go against your Uma's own strengths and preferences, meaning higher Speed can mitigate some of these detrimental factors, but it won't be the most efficient way.

Stamina

Stamina works exactly how you likely think: it affects the duration your Uma can maintain their top speed. Specifically, it helps calculate their HP in a race, which is what is spent as they run.

Longer distance races will push this stat more, but it's also a major start for an Uma in any race that attempts to catch up and overtake with a steady sprint once the others start to burn out.

Some skills also cost HP, so it's worth keeping that in mind when training your Uma and selecting their skills.

Power

Power affects your Uma's ability to push through a crowd and reposition. This can be especially important for Uma like Gold Ship—those who trail at the back before pushing to the front later in the race. Without a high Power stat, late-race Umas can struggle to execute their strategy simply by being blocked by a group.

Guts

Guts isn't considered a major stat in the global version at launch. Remember how we said things will change with future updates? This is one of the major examples of that.

In the global launch, it's widely understood that Guts either affects how quickly your Uma loses speed after exhausting their stamina. It's a bit like a last-ditch effort. Their resolve, in a way.

The other theory is that it reduces the stamina/HP drain rate during Late-Race/Last Spurts—the moments some Uma rely on to push from the back of the pack to the front in a final sprint.

Wit

Being one of the easier stats to train, given its low Energy usage, high Wit can be a valuable asset to any Uma that relies on its skills to get by. That's because the Wit stat boosts the chance of a skill activating and reduces the chance of your Uma becoming "Rushed," which causes them to burn through endurance earlier than their strategy may typically call for.

There are other observed benefits, like reducing excess stamina drain on any downhill sections of a course, but it's the skill chance modifier that's going to apply more often than not. Focus on Wit if your Uma depends on its skills. Otherwise, it's a fairly easy one to ignore in favor of something else.

How do I know which Umamusume stat to train?

Not sure which stat your Trainee is likely to put to good use? The best way is to refer to their Aptitudes by clicking Full Stats on the main career page.

Each Uma has a predisposition to certain styles, distances, and track types, giving you a rough path to follow in your training.

Before a race, it's worth checking out all of the potential modifiers against your Uma's preferences. The higher the grading letter next to each entry on the Aptitude menu, the better they'll perform.

It's also worth listening to commentator feedback at the end of a race. If your Trainee fails to finish in first place, comments like "she struggled to break through the crowd" can give you hints on which stat you might need to improve for the next race.

Aptitudes explained

Umamusume races are comprised of numerous aspects: namely, track types (or Terrain), and Distance. Further to that, your runner's Style, akin to their strategy, will play a major role in how they approach each race and its outcome. Here's a breakdown:

Distance (meters)
Sprint Short Medium Long
<1400m 1400m+ 2000+ 2500+
Terrain
Turf Dirt
Style
Front Runner Pace Chaser Late Surger End Closer
Stay in front. Hug the front. Then overtake Stay back early. Close later.

Stay at the back. Rush at the end.

With Sprint and Short races, Trainees with high Speed and low Stamina can dominate with the Front Runner style on their preferred turf.

In Medium and Long races, however, low Stamina may cause them to burn out before the end of the race, ultimately losing their strong early position.

Likewise, runners with high Stamina and Speed can steal Medium and Long race wins with the Late Surger or End Closer styles, which prioritize conserving energy at the back before pushing through waning runners in the closing sections of a race.

If too many use the Pace Chaser or Late Surger styles, though, an End Closer can struggle to fight through the crowd without sufficient Power, rendering the late-game strategy obsolete.

Other ways to increase stats in Umamusume

Spending turns training or selecting top-tier Veterans in Career mode isn't the only way to increase your Trainee's stats.

Increasing their Star Level via Statues earned via duplicate pulls will increase their base stats, too. Taking part in races awards stat boosts as well as increasing your Uma's fanbase, making it another worthwhile way to spend a turn.

Stats are also affected temporarily by your Uma's mood during a race. The 'Good' mood raises stats by 2% for the race, with the 'Great' mood boosting them by a fairly substantial 4%.

This can make a big difference in a race, making rest and recreation in the turns leading up to a career race potentially more valuable than training alone.

And that should be everything you need to know about Umamusume stats and training. For now, at least. We'll update this with new mechanics as and when they drop. Until then, check out the best gacha games on PC if you like to take your chances, or relax with the best free PC games around.
