Failed MOBA Paragon is getting one final goodbye, just not in the way you'd expect. The game's map is coming back in Predecessor, a spiritual successor to Paragon, alongside a huge new update. Now that Predecessor has fully outlived what inspired it, though, the game is going to start moving beyond what came before. So if you're tired of League of Legends, Dota 2, or even Heroes of the Storm, now's the time to give Predecessor a shot.

You might not remember Paragon. It was Epic's attempt to make one of the best MOBA games back in 2016, but it didn't last long. The Fortnite creator shut the game down just two years later, admitting it "didn't execute well enough to deliver on the promise of Paragon." The game struggled to find a playerbase, and like so many live-service videogames these days, went extinct.

Then, in 2022, along comes Predecessor. Developed by Omeda Studios, it's a spiritual successor to Paragon, but it aims to be even bigger. The free Steam game features more than 30 heroes, five-on-five combat, and has been going from strength to strength in recent years. Adopting a third-person perspective, it uses Paragon assets to keep that game alive.

To celebrate where Predecessor has come from, Omeda Studios has revealed patch 1.7. For starters, it brings back Paragon's original map, Agora, fully rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. The map will be available for all players for a limited time through the new Legacy Mode in Predecessor LABS, and acts as a nostalgic look back at the game's roots.

That's not all, though, because 1.7 also introduces an entirely original hero: Renna. The midlaner is a sorceress corrupted by ancient evils, who uses dark magic to get what she wants. She can even harvest the essence of fallen enemies to grow stronger, and drain them while healing herself.

Predecessor update Paragon map

Predecessor is doing more than just looking back at Paragon, however. Omeda Studios is now heading in a creative direction entirely its own, as future updates will be separate from the source material.

"Paragon has undoubtedly played a special role in our story and we're thrilled to be able to revisit the original map for one final time before we embark on this exciting new chapter for Predecessor," Omeda Studios CEO Robbie Singh says. "Our community and playerbase is so important to us and I can't wait to join them on the battlefield in Agora for one last time."

Omeda Studios will release Predecessor patch 1.7 on Tuesday July 22. You can find the game on Steam right here.
