Will Nelson's Avatar

It's no secret I was massively let down by Starfield. Bethesda's knack for creating engaging open worlds was flung out of the airlock, as one thousand barren planets took center stage instead of more deliberate landscapes. In the two years since launch, though, I've been on the lookout for a game that'd live up to the image of what I wanted Starfield to be. Starrupture promises to offer just that, and it's finally having a playtest very soon. Blending shooting, survival, and base building together, this is one I simply can't wait for.

In Starrupture, you've been sent to an alien planet to fulfil your prison sentence. This means, instead of serving time in a cell, you're expanding humanity's penchant for industrial production and technological research. Dangerous lifeforms and repeated cataclysms ravage the surface, though, so you need to be extra careful.

This is where Starrupture's three main pillars come into play: base building, exploration, and combat. After mining and processing the planet's resources, you need to build yourself a safe haven. This new home is where you'll plan all of your intergalactic industrialization, as you design conveyors, refineries, and all manner of manufacturing plants. Starrupture already looks like it'll rival some of this year's best survival games, and it may even put Starfield to shame.

You'll then be set upon by the space game's fauna, as gigantic spider-like creatures and other creepy crawlies take aim at your hard work. That's why you've got a wide range of guns, with assault rifles and shotguns (hopefully) giving you the edge. You can even play with friends, which should make your prison sentence slightly more bearable.

If developer Creepy Jar does select you for the playtest, you'll get quite the early look at Starrupture. This version of the game includes more than three hours of gameplay, all split between the early parts of the experience. You'll engage with the core mechanics, a guided tutorial, and a free play option with a handful of restrictions placed on the map. There's no co-op in this version, but the team notes that there's no time limit on your session.

Creepy Jar is running the Starrupture playtest from Tuesday July 29 to Thursday July 31. You can request access right here.

If you want more, we've also got all the best base building games and open-world games you can play today.
