Rimworld is one of my favorite colony sims of all time, and the actual Rimworld system requirements are so accessible that most gaming laptops and PCs should have no issues getting the game to run. However, start packing on the DLCs or loading up some of the community's mods en masse and you'll encounter a CPU nightmare.

If, however, you're only interested in the vanilla Rimworld experience, the game runs incredibly well on old hardware, even with the inclusion of the Odyssey, Biotech, Anomaly, Royalty, and Ideology DLC packs. As a long-time player, I would, however, recommend checking out one of the processors on our buying guides for the best gaming CPU if you want to get the most out of the game. A good CPU isn't as necessary since multi-threading was added to the game in the 1.6 update, but the game can still put a huge demand on your processor once your colony reaches a considerable size, or you use a lot of the best Rimworld mods.

For quite some time, the Rimworld minimum requirements were a bit of an understatement due to the game's largely single-threaded nature. Fortunately, the 1.6 update, which launched alongside the Odyssey DLC, introduced multi-threading to the game and significantly improved the game's overall performance. Regardless, the actual minimum specs remain the same, demanding only an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU, an Intel HD Graphics 4000 GPU, and 4GB of RAM.

This level of hardware should be exceeded with little difficulty by any modern or even ancient gaming laptop or PC. Despite that, I'd recommend getting a really good CPU such as the Intel Core i5 12400F if you're on a budget or better to improve your frame rates, particularly when your pawn count exceeds 100, or you get raided by a massive band of rabid squirrels.

You'll also want to consider using a beefier PC if you want to install any of the incredible mods that the passionate community has created over the years, many of which are already compatible with the latest version of the game. If you don't know where to start, consider looking at the Vanilla Expanded modlist. I'd recommend, from my long personal experience with the game, having at least 16GB of RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 1060 GPU, or better, if you do start exploring in this direction.

The listed Rimworld download size only requires 500MB of space, but that's only for the base game. If you have all of the available DLC installed, you'll actually need about 3.5GB of space, and considerably more if you dip your toes into the world of modding. An SSD isn't required, but I would recommend installing the game on the best gaming SSD so you can reduce loading times. Trust me, loading times can be pretty long in Rimworld, though the 1.6 update did reduce these considerably.
