Starcraft 2 spiritual successor Stormgate's next update will be a full campaign

I maintain a lot of hope for Starcraft 2 spiritual successor Stormgate. With ex Blizzard veterans helming developer Frost Giant, and worldbuilding assisted by series co-creator Chris Metzen, it's certainly got the chops to follow up the classic RTS the way games like Tempest Rising and 9-Bit Armies have done for Command and Conquer. Early access has been mixed, but there's a long way to go; a lot of improvements have rolled out in the year since launch. Now, Frost Giant reveals that the next Stormgate update will bring its first full campaign, although it stresses that this won't mean a jump to 1.0.

"Today we're excited to share that our biggest milestone yet is fast approaching," Frost Giant announces. "Our next big step, coming in update 0.6, is the full release of the Vanguard campaign, which we're calling Stormgate Campaign One - Ashes of Earth." It says that this launch, focusing on the human faction, "will no longer be in early access," but that there's still plenty more work to do as Frost Giant aims for a spot among our best RTS games. "This is not version 1.0 of Stormgate and this isn't the finish line."

"We've come a long way since opening the gates to Stormgate's early-access release just over a year ago," it continues, admitting, "That initial release was a rough foundation without polish, lacking many features, and it didn't even include Stormgates. With your feedback and support we've made significant improvements across the board." Among those, we've seen a complete art overhaul helmed by Starcraft 2 lead artist Allen Dilling, major balance changes, design tweaks, and most recently the launch of an alpha version of a map editor.

While the Vanguard campaign is set to be the biggest feature of Stormgate 0.6, Frost Giant promises "lots of changes and improvements," along with a wider rollout of experimental features and modes including open access to the terrain editor. Sigma Labs will let you dive into co-op missions, and there will be "even more experiments in the months to come, like our Team Mayhem 3v3 mode."

There's currently no date for the patch, but it sounds like we can expect to hear more in the near future. "If you've been waiting for the perfect moment before diving in or inviting your friends to try out Stormgate's campaign and 1v1 modes, this will be the best time to dive in," Frost Giant concludes. I'm certainly eager to see how far the story mode has come; hopefully it'll leave me ready for its eventual Infernal Host and Celestial Armada equivalents.
