Project Zomboid's cars are fickle, treacherous machines that always seem to break down at precisely the worst moment. You need a vehicle - once you've picked clean your starting neighborhood and have designs on the big army surplus store in Doe Valley, four wheels and an engine become essential. But a lethal collision never feels far away and mechanical failure is inevitable. My car died in Louisville once. My base was in southern Muldraugh. That was a long walk. As Project Zomboid build 42 rolls on and The Indie Stone launches successive, game-changing updates, one new, car-focused mod makes the entirety of Knox Country feel more alive and real.

As well as their penchant for, well, killing you, Project Zomboid's cars are also notoriously difficult to acquire. Spawns are inconsistent. You need to find a key (or have the hotwire skill). And even when you fill them with gas and get them running, there's every chance they've had their fender bent before you've even gotten there, and the engine is now on a measly, doomed-to-expire 20%.

As well as one of the best zombie games, Project Zomboid also belongs on the list of best survival games and, as such, valuable resources like working cars are supposed to come at a premium. But with the whole of Kentucky transformed into walking corpses (I still think Spiffo did it), shouldn't there be more empty vehicles around? One of the best Project Zomboid mods, meet the aptly named 'Way More Cars,' a new Zomboid mod by 'Gamestamechanic'.

"Ever wondered, 'hey, where did all these zombies come from?'," Gamestamechanic asks. "Well, wonder no longer. Cars, cars absolutely everywhere a car can be. Large zombie populations now have an excuse to exist." In short, all those empty parking spaces outside strip malls, houses, police stations, and every other building in Project Zomboid are now filled by a car. Roads are busier. You don't have to walk for miles to find a potential new vehicle.

It adds some extra realism to Project Zomboid, making Knox Country feel that much more like a (formerly) lived-in place. However, if the prospect of easy-to-find cars spoils the difficulty for you, the mod has two alternate settings.

If you use the 'burned' option, 99% of the cars you find will be charred, ash-covered hulls, easy to interpret as signs of the civil unrest that swept Knox in the outbreak's immediate aftermath. Use the 'wrecked' setting, and every single car - 100% of all vehicles on the map - will be reduced to a barely running, near write off, with a maximum parts condition of but 30%. You can get Way More Cars here.
