The Beauty of an Unfinished Picture

“He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Ecclesiastes 3:11 (NIV)

Piece by piece, the picture was finally coming together. As I assembled the puzzle, I knew that once it was finished, it would be beautiful: a vibrant array of watercolor florals surrounding a verse from God’s Word: “Be still, and know …” (Psalm 46:10, NIV).

My joy was short-lived, however, as I placed the last puzzle piece and discovered one was missing. You’ve got to be kidding me! As a puzzle enthusiast and completionist, nothing frustrates me more than an unfinished picture. Had I known one of the pieces was missing, I wouldn’t have even bothered doing the puzzle to begin with. It felt like all my hard work had been for nothing.

Sometimes I’m tempted to have that same mentality with the ideas and dreams God places in my heart. When I step out in faith and the outcome looks nothing like I expected, it’s easy to feel regret and disappointment, like I’ve missed the mark.

Ecclesiastes 3:11 reminds us, “He has made everything beautiful in its time … yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end.” Though I see gaps and missing pieces, God sees the complete picture He’s creating. What feels wasted or incomplete to me is still being shaped by His hands for His good and perfect purpose.

The truth is our faith-filled efforts are never in vain, even when results aren’t what we expected (1 Corinthians 15:58). Beauty can still be found in the process. My puzzle with a missing piece still reflected something lovely — and in the same way, our lives can display God’s goodness even when they don’t look like the polished picture we’d envisioned.

Deep down, we all long for resolution and completion. That ache exists because God has “set eternity in the human heart” (Ecclesiastes 3:11). We are made for something more than this life — a day when every piece will be in place, every work will be complete, and every disappointment will be redeemed. Until then, God calls us to trust Him in the process, surrender our expectations, and rest in His timing.

When the picture of our lives looks unfinished, we can take heart: God has not abandoned His work in us. What looks like failure in our eyes may be the very place where He is weaving beauty. Even in the waiting, in what feels incomplete, we can trust His hand is at work.

One day when we stand with Him in eternity, the picture will be whole, every missing piece in place — and it will be more glorious than we could ever imagine.

Lord, thank You that You hold all things together and already see the finished picture of my life. Your faithful hand is still at work, making all things beautiful in Your perfect timing. Help me trust Your process when I wrestle with disappointments and unmet longings. Open my eyes to see Your goodness as Your greater purpose unfolds. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
