For thirteen days in October 1962, Soviet nuclear missiles sat on Cuban soil aimed at American cities, while President Kennedy and Premier Khrushchev exchanged messages that read like polite ultimatums toward catastrophe. Television coverage brought the crisis into American living rooms in real time, making it the first nuclear standoff that ordinary people could watch unfold.

What those television sets did not show was a Soviet submarine, B-59, sitting in darkness in the Atlantic Ocean while U.S. Navy vessels depth-charged it attempting to force it to the surface. Cut off from communication with Moscow, the submarine’s captain believed war may have already begun. He wanted to arm and fire a nuclear torpedo. Into this already volatile atmosphere came a single catastrophic event. In September 1983, just weeks before Petrov’s night shift, Soviet air defense forces shot down Korean Air Lines Flight 007, a civilian airliner that had strayed into restricted Soviet airspace. All 269 people on board were killed, including a sitting United States congressman, Representative Larry McDonald of Georgia. The international outrage was immediate and volcanic. Petrov’s incident was not an isolated aberration. That was when the world began to learn just how many times it had almost not made it.

Stanislav Petrov lived until 2017. He was eventually recognized by the United Nations and received honors from international organizations in the final years of his life. In interviews, he was consistently reluctant to embrace the role of hero. “I was just doing my job,” he said — a deflection that, given the stakes of the job in question, lands somewhere between modest and haunting.

That deflection is, in a way, the whole point. The height of the Cold War was not a single crisis with a dramatic beginning and a satisfying resolution. The systems around them are faster and more automated than anything Petrov ever sat in front of, and the world they are nominally protecting is no less fragile. History suggests we should hope, very much, that they are in some essential way a little like him.
