A Prayer for Letting Go of What Is Weighing You Down

Imagine carrying a backpack filled with rocks everywhere you go. Each step becomes harder. Your posture changes. Your energy fades.

That’s exactly what emotional burdens do to our souls.

Heidi Vegh shares a powerful image from a grief retreat where a volunteer carried a backpack filled with rocks labeled grief, loss, regret, shame, worry, disappointment, and unforgiveness. As each rock was removed, the burden became lighter. The illustration revealed a spiritual truth many of us need to remember: we don’t have to carry what Jesus invites us to surrender.

Too often we continue carrying yesterday’s mistakes, old wounds, unresolved grief, and lingering shame. Yet Scripture reminds us that there is no condemnation for those who belong to Christ. God is not asking us to carry the weight of our past forever.

Like Joseph, who chose forgiveness despite tremendous suffering, we are invited to trust that God can redeem what was meant for harm and use it for good. The process of surrender may take time, but every burden placed at the feet of Jesus creates room for His peace, joy, and restoration.

Today, consider what rock you’ve been carrying for too long. Then bring it to the Lord and leave it there.

Prayer

Lord,

My backpack feels heavy. Some days I carry grief, regret, shame, worry, disappointment, and pain that I was never meant to bear alone.

Help me stop picking up what You have already asked me to surrender. Teach me to leave my burdens at the foot of the cross and trust You with the parts of my story that still hurt.

Replace my anxiety with peace. Replace my shame with grace. Replace my grief with hope. Remind me that You are a God of restoration who can bring beauty from brokenness and purpose from pain.

Give me the courage to let go and the faith to trust that what I place in Your hands is safe.

In Jesus’ name,

Amen.
