New Assassin's Creed Black Flag Steam update is the biggest remake hint yet

We could, I repeat could, have just had our most concrete piece of evidence for the Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake's existence. A mysterious update on the Steam backend points to some features that aren't in the original game, and this might mean Ubisoft's remake is closer than ever. If not, we could be getting a big Black Flag update any day now.

Rumors of an Assassin's Creed Black Flag remake have been circulating for quite some time. A report from 2023 suggested that Ubisoft was modernizing Edward Kenway's high-seas adventure, but the studio is yet to say anything official. Then, just recently, Kenway's voice actor Matt Ryan told a fan "you might have to beat it again," spurring the hope for a new version of the game.

Black Flag is an easy pick for one of the best pirate games ever made, and now a new update on the Steam backend feels like a hint that a remake does, in fact, exist. On Tuesday July 8, the store categories were changed for Black Flag. Six new categories were added, including custom volume controls, stereo sound, surround sound, a mouse only option, adjustable difficulty, and save anytime (via the Assassin's Creed subreddit).

It's worth noting that options like saving anytime and adjusting the difficulty aren't actually available in Black Flag right now, so these backend store changes could mean multiple things. First, and in my opinion the most likely, is that these could be coming to the original version of Black Flag. If I put my tinfoil hat on, though, these changes could also point to the remake. Ubisoft could have these new options planned for this version of the game and be gearing up for an announcement.

From what I can tell, these changes are also exclusive to the Steam backend right now, so there's no telling when they might rear their heads in an actual game.

While we wait for confirmation of the remake, though, now's the ideal time to revisit the original Black Flag. Ubisoft added Steam achievements to the game late last year, as it continues to bring them to games across Assassin's Creed, Far Cry, and its other series.
