Free-to-play, multiplayer mech game Steel Hunters will shut down in October, developer Wargaming Group confirms. The newly launched PvPvE shooter hit Steam Early Access in April, but has been met with mixed user reviews and a sharp decline in players since release. Now, the World of Tanks studio says it has "made the decision to sunset Steel Hunters," and will unlock its full roster of Hunters for everyone to use in the final days before its closure.
With the backing of Wargaming Group, Steel Hunters was set to contest for a spot among the best multiplayer games on PC. In the wake of a cataclysmic event, the eponymous Hunters clash over the skies of Earth in an attempt to secure a precious extraterrestrial resource known as 'Starfall.' First launched into early access on Wednesday April 2, it's a completely free Steam game, with Wargaming publishing director Dan Tanasescu confirming that the first full season would include no microtransactions or monetization.
Sadly, its time appears to have been short-lived, as Wargaming decides that "continuing development is not sustainable." Currently, Steel Hunters Steam reviews sit at 57% positive, and its launch peak of 4,479 players has trailed off to a high of less than 100 in the last 24 hours. "We know that this isn't the news anyone wants to hear and we genuinely share in your disappointment," the developer continues.
Wargaming says that servers will remain live for at least 90 days, with the shutdown currently estimated to arrive on Wednesday October 8. In an attempt to make those last few months something to remember, it's introducing custom game support "so you can play with your friends, set up community matches, and create some final memories together." All Hunters will be fully unlocked for all players, "including Hunters nobody has seen yet."
The studio says it is also intending to hold a "goodbye tournament" before it draws things to a close. "We are immensely grateful for your time, feedback, memes, and the countless memorable battles we've shared," it concludes.
"From the very first days of alpha you've shaped Steel Hunters with your energy, creativity, and dedication, and we're honored to have had you on this journey. We couldn't have wished for a better community and we'll miss you all dearly. Thank you Hunters for everything."
Wargaming group plans to shut down the Steel Hunters servers on Wednesday October 8. Until then, you can download and play the game free on Steam.
