Falling Into God’s Grace Again

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Hebrews 4:16 (NIV)

Needing help is hard. Asking for it? Even harder. But depending on others entirely? That’s overwhelming.

Last summer, after major hip surgery, I landed here. For six weeks, a walker became my constant companion. I relied on loved ones for everything — showering, dressing, making meals, caring for my home and children, and comforting me when my courage failed.

I longed to stand on my own again, but frailty kept me leaning on their kindness. Beneath the pain, a quiet fear surfaced: What if I ask too much and exhaust my caregivers' patience?

Sometimes I carry this same insecurity into my relationship with Jesus, fearing I’m failing Him or I’m too much. Maybe you do too.

Life can knock us off our feet, reminding us how much we need Jesus. It’s painful to show up weak and needy, fighting familiar battles — again. Shame tightens our chests, making us hesitate to approach our Savior, even when we know biblical Truth. We wonder:

Am I disappointing God?
Should I be past this struggle by now?
Will I wear out His grace?

When we fear we’ve worn out our welcome with God, Scripture invites us to come anyway: “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need” (Hebrews 4:16).

For the original audience of Hebrews, this idea was radical. In the Old Testament, only the high priest could enter God’s presence once a year in the temple, with great caution (Leviticus 16). But when Jesus died for us, the temple veil was torn, opening the way for us to approach God freely and personally (Matthew 27:51).

We can accept the invitation to approach God’s throne of grace boldly, not because we have it all together but because of who Jesus is: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are—yet he did not sin” (Hebrews 4:15, NIV).

Jesus welcomes us with open arms, no matter how often we stumble toward Him. He never sighs in exasperation or whispers, “You again? Why are you still struggling with this?”

Our High Priest, Jesus, sits at God’s right hand. He invites His beloved daughters to come, unhindered and secure in His love, and clothes us in His perfect righteousness. He lifts the lowly, nourishes the weary, and embraces us with endless mercy and grace.

Maybe you worry you’re a burden or too broken, wondering if God’s grace for you might run dry. But weakness isn’t a reason to stay away from Jesus; it’s the very reason He calls you and me close (2 Corinthians 12:10). So let’s fall into His grace again and again, confident He will catch us in our time of need.

Heavenly Father, thank You for Your endless mercy and grace. When shame tempts me to withdraw, help me draw near, trusting You’ll meet every need. In Jesus’ Name, Amen.
