Capstan Games' historical pirate adventure, Ahoy, has been successfully funded on Kickstarter following a month-long campaign. In fact, over 5,159 backers have pledged nearly seven times its goal, with the current pot at a huge $757,449.

Set in the West Indies of 1780, Ahoy is an open-world pirate game that's on track to give Sea of Thieves a run for its money. Described by its developer as a "first-person multicrew Age of Sail game," this is a sprawling, historically accurate pseudo sim that sets you loose amid the late-18th-century Caribbean in search of glory, adventure, and, of course, profit.

Being the captain of your own vessel isn't plain sailing. You'll need to navigate your ship through treacherous waters, manage your crew through a deep, hierarchical system, and make tough decisions that will pit your morals against your coin purse.

But you won't be setting sail alone. Ahoy is a multiplayer experience that supports between two and ten virtual pirates per ship, which is even more than in Sea of Thieves. That means you can team up with friends to explore the vast West Indies, trading goods, and cooperating in ferocious naval battles. Just be aware: if a crew member dies, they won't return from Davy Jones' locker. You'll have to manage a crewmate down.

If that sounds right up your street, you're not the only one. Ahoy's Kickstarter campaign began on Sunday June 8, and as of Tuesday July 8, the open-world adventure is 694% funded, earning $757,449 / £555,626 against a goal of $109,058 / £80,000.

Thanks to this support, not only are Ahoy's relaxing Sea Trails and Arena modes sailing toward release, but developer Capstan can work on new modes, features, maps, and ships, also. With only four more stretch goals left to reach, the horizon looks bright for this historically authentic voyage.
