Exploring an alien world and cloning yourself doesn't demand much from your PC or gaming laptop. In fact, The Alters system requirements call for hardware that's almost ten years old, but it's when you want to run the game on the highest graphics preset that The Alters' hidden fangs appear.
You might not need one of the best graphics cards from our 2025 buyers guide to get The Alters running, but you will want to consider one if you are trying to surpass the game's recommended specs. Fortunately, you don't need a particularly powerful rig to get the game running on the lower settings and immerse yourself in one of the best survival games of 2025.
Here are The Alters system requirements in 2025:
Minimum | Recommended | |
OS | Windows 10 64-bit | |
CPU | Intel Core i7 6700 AMD Ryzen 5 1600 |
Intel Core i7 8700K AMD Ryzen 7 5800X |
GPU | Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 AMD Radeon RX 570 Intel Arc A570 |
Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT Intel Arc A770 |
VRAM | 6GB | 8GB |
Storage | 50GB | |
RAM | 16GB | 16GB |
The Alters minimum requirements are idyllic for most mid-range gaming setups, requiring only an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 or AMD Radeon RX 570 GPU, Intel Core i7 6700 or AMD Ryzen 5 1600 CPU, and 16GB of RAM. Both the GTX 1060 and RX 570 can be considered entry-level hardware by modern standards, and most rigs should already have 16GB of the best gaming RAM unless they're in dire need of an upgrade. So long as you meet these requirements, you can expect to see 30fps at an "upscaled 1080p" on the low graphics preset.
Now we see a slight jump from the minimum requirements to The Alters recommended specs, which call for an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2070 or AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT GPU, an Intel Core i7 8700K or AMD Ryzen 7 5800X CPU, and 16GB of RAM. Here, you can enjoy the game on the high graphics preset at 60fps at an "upscaled 1080p." This still isn't enough to run the game on the ultra settings, and that's where the game makes a leap in hardware demands.
Minimum | |
OS | Windows 10 64-bit |
CPU | Intel Core i7 12700 AMD Ryzen 9 5900X |
GPU | Nvidia GeForce RTX 3080 AMD Radeon RX 6800 XT |
VRAM | 16GB |
Storage | 50GB |
RAM | 32GB |
The Alters ultra specs call for an RTX 3080, RX 6800 XT, or similar card with 16GB of VRAM. You'll need to double your RAM to 32GB and get one of the best gaming CPUs like the Intel Core i7-12700 or AMD Ryzen 9 5900X. Meet these demands, and you can expect 60fps at an "upscaled 2160p" or 4K resolution.
A need for upscaling in system requirements suggests either unoptimization on the part of the game, or the developers' desire to try and keep system requirements lower than they would be using native gameplay.
We recently discussed the worrying trend of upscaling being used in system requirements and found that it has no place, with vague, unspecific upscaling, like we see here, being the worst offender. If you're going to include upscaling in your system requirements, at least be upfront about the level of upscaling that has been used and whether it is Nvidia DLSS or AMD FSR being used.
Elsewhere, The Alters download size requires 50GB of storage space on the best gaming SSD. An SSD is a hard requirement, even at The Alter's entry-level demands, so owners of traditional hard disk drives will need to consider an upgrade.
In all, The Alters is a very challenging game, both in its higher-end system requirements and in its higher in-game difficulty settings.
