Free Destiny 2 open access event gives you a chance to play every expansion

If you've always wanted to get into Destiny 2, now's the perfect time. Bungie is starting D2 open access, which gives you the chance to play all the currently available expansions and episodes for free. You only have a limited time to get involved, but can keep all your earned currencies and gear if you decide to make the jump into the FPS proper. With Destiny 2 The Edge of Fate looming, it's the ideal way to get primed for the start of the game's newest saga.

Destiny 2 remains a stalwart entry in our best free PC games list, and for very good reason. Bungie's MMO and FPS hybrid is absolutely packed with things to do, and has one of the most in-depth universes in all of science fiction. You've got PvE and PvP modes, mountains of gear, hardcore raids, and a constantly evolving narrative that rivals even FF14. Jumping into everything Destiny 2 has to offer can be quite overwhelming, though, so this is where the new open access period comes in.

Starting today, all currently available Destiny 2 expansions will be free on Steam, Epic, and the Microsoft Store, as well as Playstation and Xbox. This means you can play through whatever hasn't been put into the 'Destiny Content Vault' (where Bungie locks away older releases to stop D2 from feeling overloaded).

You've also got access to the currently available Episodes (extra story releases) until Tuesday July 15, when Bungie will vault them. Basically, you've got a week to play through The Final Shape's extra Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy episodes before they're gone.

Whatever you get up to during Destiny 2 open access, though, Bungie wants you to know you'll keep what you earn. Any currencies, gear, titles, triumphs, and cosmetics you unlock are yours forever, meaning you can carry on using them if you choose to keep playing.

Now's the ideal time to get to grips with the game, too, because the next storyline is right around the corner. The Destiny 2 new season release date is just a week away, alongside the brand-new The Edge of Fate expansion. Then, later this year, the Star Wars-inspired Renegades expansion is also dropping. This DLC acts as an homage to a galaxy far, far, away, where laser swords and blasters abound.

Bungie is running the Destiny 2 open access period from Tuesday July 8 until Tuesday July 22, giving you access to all of the game's currently available expansions for two weeks.
