Avatar's Pandora, Star Wars' Hoth, and the various worlds of the Borderlands series all offer severely hostile planets, but few are as dangerous as Arrakis from the Dune franchise. If the two suns aren't melting your flesh away, the impending threat of the ever-hungry Sandworms will give you a reason to shelter, and that's not counting the sand-covered environment you'd find yourself in. If you want to take on the challenge, now's your chance to dive into Dune Awakening's take on the iconic sci-fi planet with its first big discount.
As far as survival games go, Dune Awakening is easily my favorite. The emptiness in most biomes from other titles in the genre would usually be a pain point, but with Dune Awakening's constant threat of Sandworms, they're oceans of potential death, and the pain of losing your hard-earned items is always scary.
Even if you manage to outlive the ferocious creatures underneath the sandy surface, there are other things to worry about in this new PC game. While you don't have to think about finding oxygen to breathe, you do need to consider getting a constant supply of water or risk suffering from dehydration, which is arguably a fate worse than becoming a gigantic worm's breakfast or lunch.
The sci-fi elements combined with fantasy-style lore make Dune Awakening the best space game of the year so far. If you can manage to survive the hostile world you find yourself in, it's a breathtaking land that is visually stunning, as the light of the two suns peek over the shade you're always hiding behind. I also love the base-building mechanics, giving you the opportunity to cultivate your own sandy home away from home.
Even if you're not a fan of the franchise, Dune Awakening's solid foundations and survival mechanics make it a must-play for fans of the genre. If you find yourself struggling to face the challenging odds, much like I do whenever making a new character, you can use our long list of Dune Awakening guides to live another day.
For those who have been waiting to get on a one-way trip to Arrakis, you can now grab Dune Awakening for just $42.49 / £35.69 at Fanatical, a discount worthy of the Muad'Dib just weeks after launch. However, if you want to showcase your love for this sandy destination even more, you can also get the same 15% discount on the higher two editions of the game, with the season pass for additional content in the deluxe edition, and a bunch of great cosmetics in the ultimate edition.
If you're like me, eagerly waiting for all of the upcoming PC games to add to your backlog, Dune Awakening is a great way to pass the time, especially at such a great price. I'd even argue it's one of the best PC games that has been released this year, despite the fact that it's up against plenty of heavy hitters already.
