Free-to-play looter shooter The First Descendant has just kicked off its anniversary event, and if you've ever considered dipping in, or played it early on but lapsed, it's a great time to check in. Developer Nexon has continued to build on its base with several seasons of updates, and to celebrate its first birthday there's a special event with rewards including a choice of a free Descendant and up to three Ultimate Weapons up for grabs.

If you're looking for a new free Steam game, I'd recommend giving The First Descendant a try. Its blend of gunplay and character-driven skills is reminiscent of Warframe, but without the decade-plus of experience and updates to catch up on. Season 3 is set to begin in August, meaning that you'll have plenty of time to work through the current story and get a feel for the endgame before the new update arrives. There's even a crossover with Nier Automata on the way.

The First Descendant's one-year anniversary event has just begun, and you'll earn special tokens just by playing. There are daily rewards for taking on intercept battles, infiltration operations, sigma sectors, void vessels, and regional missions, which comprise a vast majority of the activities you'll already be doing as you play, meaning the Anniversary Tokens should rack up pretty quickly without having to think about it.

Head to Anais in the main hub of Albion, and you'll find all manner of rewards that you can exchange your tokens for. These include various cosmetics, sprays, and currencies, but the big two are the Descendant Purchase Ticket Selection Box and Ultimate Weapon Selection Box. The first, as you'd expect, gives you one character of your choice from almost the full roster, with only a couple of the newest additions such as Keelan and Ines unavailable.

The second option grants you a free Ultimate Weapon from a nice selection, and can be claimed up to three times to give your arsenal a quick upgrade. Both boxes are pretty reasonably priced, at 300 and 200 tokens respectively, meaning you won't even have to play for a long time to claim them; there's a bonus of 100 tokens for finishing five daily missions and another 200 available when you hit ten, for example, with increasing payouts as you complete more.

The First Descendant anniversary event is live now and runs until Wednesday August 6; you'll be able to trade your tokens at Anais's shop until Wednesday August 13. Read through the patch notes courtesy of Nexon for a full list of rewards and their prices.
