Activision has brought the Microsoft PC store version of Call of Duty: WW2 offline, as it investigates what it calls "an issue." While it's currently unclear what the developer thinks this problem is, it's come right as the 2017 shooter appears to be suffering from a major hacking problem on PC. Players from across the community are reporting myriad cyberattacks while in multiplayer, as they lose control of their rigs. With Call of Duty Black Ops 7 on the way, some people revisiting World War II have been left with a very nasty surprise.

On Tuesday June 30, Activision brought Call of Duty: WW2 to Game Pass. If you're a subscriber, this means you can play the shooter via Game Pass Ultimate, PC Game Pass, and Game Pass Standard at no extra cost. You can also still play WW2 via Steam and consoles, of course, but its arrival on Game Pass means many are flocking back to the Sledgehammer Games entry in the series en masse.

Then, just a few days later, Activision also took ten Call of Duty games temporarily offline. This was for unspecified "maintenance" and lasted just four hours, but World War II was one of the Call of Duty games under the microscope. Despite the series often finding its way onto our best FPS games list, however, the WW2 entry is seemingly having some major issues.

In the past few days, Call of Duty: World War II players have been reporting a widespread hacking problem. Across social media and forums, people are sharing clips that show apparent hackers taunting them by opening their notepad app and instigating a remote code execution (RCE) hack on their PC. You can see one apparent example from 'Wrioh' below.

An RCE hack occurs when an attacker runs code on a victim's device, causing a serious security issue in online videogames as other players can maliciously ambush your PC. It happened to Dark Souls 3 back in 2022, which led to Bandai Namco bringing the entire trilogy's PC servers offline while it fixed the problem.

Amid these concerns, Activision has taken Call of Duty: WW2 offline. "Call of Duty: WW2 on PC Microsoft Store was brought offline while we investigate reports of an issue," the studio writes. Activision currently makes no direct mention of the nature of the World War II problem it's looking at, however.

The comments under the Call of Duty Updates post are all poking fun at its use of the term "an issue," claiming it's underselling just how tough it is to play the game right now. Either way, with the Call of Duty Black Ops 7 release date a ways off, I'd caution those looking to play WW2 on PC to bide your time, whenever it does come back online.

In the meantime, we've got all the best WW2 games you can play on PC today. Otherwise, take a trip back in time with the best old games you need to try.
