Let's face it: No one wants to schlep home from the grocery store with a particular product and immediately have buyer's remorse. That's why Mashed tried seven cottage cheese brands and ranked them worst to best, so you don't need to waste your money on subpar products. Next time you go to snag a container of this high-protein dairy product, avoid buying Breakstone's 2% Cottage Cheese. It came in dead last in our ranking.

To rank the store-bought cottage cheeses, our reviewer considered the texture, flavor, and curd size. Each cottage cheese brand selected was 2%, which signifies that it is low-fat. Our reviewer found that Breakstone's cottage cheese was more sour than others, rather than creamy and slightly salty. The texture, unfortunately, was disappointing — mealy, rather than slightly firm or soft, although it was at least easily scoopable. To top it off, it was one of the more expensive brands, which simply can't be justified by the flavor and texture.

On the Sam's club product page, a shopper seemed to agree with our editor, saying "the ONLY cottage cheese I'll never buy again," and others described it as watery and bland. However, not everyone shared the same sentiment.

Not everyone hates Breakstone's cottage cheese

Breakstone's 2% small curd cottage cheese

Taste is subjective, so others may certainly feel differently about Breakstone's 2% Cottage Cheese. At Sam's Club, this product receives a 4-star rating out of 5, out of 1,227 reviews, which are mostly positive. A 5-star review from a verified purchase on the product page described it as, "This cottage cheese is very good, It has the perfect texture and the flavor is fresh farm to table. Lightly salted so the real rich flavor is what you taste."

Each ½ cup serving of Breakstone's cottage cheese contains 13 grams of protein, an easy way to sneak some extra grams into a meal. If that's enough for you to give Breakstone a try, go for it. If you end up not being the biggest fan, you can always transform it into cottage cheese ice cream.

The brand also offers a few alternative options; we tried the 2% small curd, but there's also a 4% for more fat, and a large curd cottage cheese for a different texture experience. Some like to dress their cottage cheese with salt and pepper for a savory finish, but Breakstone's offers a few fruit-topping versions, including strawberry, pineapple, peach, and blueberry.
